I finally received the VOY Companion in the mail from Amazon. Full of excitement, I eagerly began to read it...
only to discover that it is merely a huge collection of episode synopses and PR blather from TPTB. really. was this a vast press release put out by Berman? all we get are rah-rah raves about VOY and how pleased Berman and co. are/were with it. all we get are long synopses of episodes. i guess there's a value in this but couldnt we simply get info like this from innumerable sites on the web?
I was hoping for a critical perspective on VOY that took a long view of its triumphs and occasional missteps, putting them all in perspective. the other Companions did that, from the excellent TOS one to the most recent DS9 one.
but this Companion is completely devoid of personality, bite, and interest. it is a COMPLETE waste of time and money unless youre eager to have a list of personnel and episode synopses. look for anything further and you, like me, will be sorely disappointed.
VOY was an uneven but deeply lovable and often brilliant show, and it deserved a nuanced and insightful treatment. The VOY Companion provides nothing whatsoever beyond dull and predictable standard information.

I guess all the reviews are right - this book just isn't up to par compared to the other very good Companions out there for Trek series. The synopses are over-long, while the background material is practically non-existent. Instead of the illuminating and interesting "behind the scenes" stories the other companions offered, you just get more synopsis: how many shuttle craft were blown up, how many cups of coffee Capt. Janeway has consumed, etc. It's as though the author did not have any access to cast, crew, or production in preparing this book. There is just no anecdotal storytelling giving you insight into the writing, casting, production, airing, ratings, zip. Nada.

This book serves as a synopsis of the series in order, which may be useful if you're trying to find a particular episode to queue up on DVD. It is merely average, and would best be picked up used at a discount.

If you are looking for the "Voyager" equivalent of the Nemecek's "The Next Generation" or Erdmann's "Deep Space Nine" Companions, this isn't it. The book consists mainly of synopses of the episodes, with small bits of "in universe" trivia for each one. There is little to no behind the scenes information, with only a few banal quotes from Rick Berman and Brannon Braga to give any "real world" perspective on the show. There are stories waiting to be told about the production of the final "TNG" era program and this doesn't have them...
RED
There's not much here that you won't find elsewhere on the net, but it's good if you're a diehard Voyager. There's a little insight into the background of the show, info on the aliens, and ships throughout the series, and my favorite, some great pictures. Plus an episode guide. If you're looking for a massive behind the scenes bible, this probably isn't it. It's much more broad, and like I said, only for the diehards.

My husband loves being able to read the episode companions after watching the episode. And the images and interviews with the cast are great.

I've always wanted this,I'm glad I've finally got it! All I need now is the Deep Space Nine Companion and I've got them all! Wish Enterprise had one too!
Mr_Jeйson
I am a big Star Trek Fan. I like to know all about the series both on and off screen. I enjoyed previous companion books, especially the Deep Space Nine edition. Though I've always been a little disappointed with Voyager, I was looking forward to the companion book to read about the ups and downs of this series.
When I received this book, I immediately turned to some of the episodes that I thought had the most problems to read about what went wrong. I kept reading and reading and I didn't see any information about the "behind the scenes." I turned to another episode and another and still, no detailed information about the production of the episode.
The Voyager Companion is mainly a very detailed synopsis of each episode. There is information on what happens to the ship, shuttles, characters and more.
If you are looking for behind the scenes or production notes, you will not find it. Except for a few extra parts of the book about characters, aliens and others, you don't get anything. And even at that, it is usually Brannon Braga (the man who is killing Star Trek, in my opinion) quotes on how good the show is.
Overall, the book gives good episode information but really lacks in some "juicy" gossip or information about the episodes. If you need an episode guide, this a good to have but don't expect any insight to the show.
An episode-by-episode review of the plot and other particulars. Another must have for Trek geeks.
