Raymond Merrill Smullyan (born May 25, 1919) is an American mathematician, concert pianist, logician, philosopher, and magician. Born in Far Rockaway, New York, his first career (like Persi Diaconis a generation later) was stage magic. He then earned a BSc from the University of Chicago in 1955 and his P. from the Princeton University in 1959. He is one of many outstanding logicians to have studied under Alonzo Church. Many of the riddles require algebra, but I haven't run into any more complicated math than that yet.

Scheherazade, we find, has gotten back into hot water with the king, and is once more in danger of losing her head at down. This book has a ton of great riddles framed in a cute, if somewhat campy storyline about Scheherazade and the sultan. Many of the riddles require algebra, but I haven't run into any more complicated math than that yet. The classic liar/truth-teller logic puzzles are here, as well as some more visual puzzles, and a few real "who am I?" riddles thrown in for fun.

I highly recommend it for a math class--I end each class with 15 minutes of riddles (sometimes we do 3 or 4 in that time, sometimes it's only enough to work through 1). Although to me some of the puzzles are just true algebra word problems, they never complain and love to figure them out.

The later parts of the book move into more advanced logic puzzles and concepts, which I am considering using for my Geometry students. A really nice resource!

My Discrete Math professor started a lecture with a riddle from this text, and I ended up seeking out a copy. This is absolutely beautiful. I showed my professor this copy and he was jealous! I would highly recommend this for anyone interested in problem solving.

I would recommend this book for all parents of children age 7 and up.The logic problems are presented as short and wonderfully written stories, and my children just love to solve them. Great reference book for any math teacher/math team coach as well.

Very clever puzzles, and many different kinds as well. Very interesting, and presented in a fun way.

I bought this book because I like math and puzzles, and a friend who teaches middle school math had mentioned that she and her class were having fun going through the puzzles. I really enjoyed the puzzles in this book, most of which are math or number oriented, but some of which are more like word riddles. The answers and thought processes used are in the back of the book, although I swear a couple are wrong! I know this sounds a little odd, but doing the puzzles at night was a great help a few nights with insomnia (so I could think through a logic or math problem in my head until I fell asleep, rather than let my mind wander to more stessful life events...)
This is probably the best book on logic puzzles ever written (aside from other Smullyan books, that is). It is witty, challenging, and has problems of all kinds. The first half is framed as a continuation to the Arabian Nights, with ingenious and original puzzles (aside from the occasional oldy snuck in) given an Arabian touch.

However, after those brilliant puzzles comes the greatest part of the book. The second half is a collection of puzzles, paradoxes, and even has a couple of chapters on coercive logic, invented by Raymond Smullyan himself.

I reccomend this book to any logic buff, or indeed to anyone who's ever enjoyed a logic puzzle. And if you don't fall into either category, then you need this book all the more.
