I should warn you that I am a pace handicapper, and so I purchased this book more out of curiosity and with a high degree of skepticism. I am happy to say that my skepticism was justified.
I use Beyer figures as an aid for eliminating horses. If one horse has Beyer figures in the mid 60s while the leading contenders have figures in the mid 70s or higher, then I feel perfectly safe in eliminating that horse from consideration. Beyond that, I seldom use the Beyer figures. So I approached this book with the idea that maybe I was just overlooking some things. I wasn't.
The problem with Cardello's examples, of which there are many, is that they are like the "Just So Stories". It's easy to find "patterns" in Beyer figures to explain why a horse won a race ..... after the fact. Unfortunately, I can find lots of similar patterns in old racing forms and the horses got nowhere near the wire.
My recommendation...save your money and keep the pace handicapper's maxim in mind: It's not how fast a horse runs, it's how a horse runs fast.

This little book helps the horse player to read, interpret, and understand the Beyer speed figs in horses' past performances. Since I have been reading the Daily Racing Form and Equibase products for 30 years, I think the incorporation of the Beyer speed figs into past performances is the single most important development in horse race handicapping during that time. This book, written by one of the people who helped Beyer develop the figs, is the essential tool if you want to learn how to use the figs. Most importantly, the author takes pains to repeat more than once that using the Beyer figs is only one element in the handicapping process. A successful horse player still must evaluate class, distance, track surface, and the other factors that go into handicapping. This book is a great addition to one's understanding of the Beyer figs and sits right next to Beyer On Speed in my library.

In short, this is a good book to provide a bit of insight behind speed figures.

If you are new to the races, this will provide you with insight for sure, but it WILL NOT explain how Beyer figures are derived, and some of the flaws they may have. For this, I would recommend "Picking Winners" and "Beyer on Speed" by Andrew Beyer. All in all, those two books are much more informative than this. However, if you would like some guidance towards possible uses of Beyer figures to "make sense" of them, this is a great book. It is loaded with some statistics, patterns, as well as rationale to why these patterms may present themselves.

If you are experienced with the races, I can't promise this book will be of great use, but like most books on strategies at the track, it does provide you with some food for thought for next time you handicap. Note this book only covers one aspect of handicapping, but it does cover it nicely.

In preparing to bet the Kentucky Derby and other races this year I read Andrew Beyer's fantastic book "Beyer on Speed" and this book. These books go together like ham and eggs. After devouring the information in Speed to Spare I, like any eager handicapper, was looking forward to applying some of the tips in this book. One way this book made me think "different" is how it helps you spot the potential favorite that may be ripe for a fall which can result in a big pay-off. I went to a track in Michigan that was simulcasting races at Santa Anita (in March, 2005) and WHAM! - I hit a trifecta using the information found in this wonderful book; for the first time in my life found myself at the IRS window with a payoff of over $3,000.00! The presentation of information in this book is easy-to-follow and the actual examples really help the "part-time" handicapper that only spends a limited amount of time at a racetrack each year. I salute Joe Cardello's book and urge anyone interested in using Beyer figures to enhance their trip to the track to buy and read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Great book! Enjoyed Joe's unique insights into Beyer patterns and general handicapping insights. If you use Beyer figures to asses form patterns, this is a must read.

I read this book about 2 years ago and I still go back to it for the detailed analysis Mr. Cordello provides. He also clearly defines patterns, bounces, topping out, etc. Excellent book with DRF forms as a reference to his explanations. An essential tool in the aresenal we all need to keep an edge.
I only knew the very basics about Beyer speed figures before I bought this book and maybe that's where I went wrong. The talk of 'bouncing' and patterns and cycles seems to contradict itself at times. I'll probably finish reading it someday, but the fact that I've had it for months and am only halfway through tells me it will be a while.
