It is the story those who raised money selling bonds. Although the book has a tendency to lean toward gossipy-ness, it spins out its stories as a tribute to the contributions of the men and women who stepped up to do what they could in wartime. It’s interesting reading, especially for aficionados of Hollywood’s Golden Age and/or the history of the Second World War. The book is replete with photographs and includes an extensive bibliography and source list.

It is the story those who raised money selling bonds. It is the story of those who put themselves in danger entertaining the troops on the front lines. Reading like a Who’s Who of Hollywood’s A-list of the 1930s and the 1940s, these are the wartime stories of the men and women who went to war on and off the screen.

In many ways, World War II was Hollywood's finest hour,"" Hoopes asserts. "Just about every male star not in the service went on at least one USO tour; among actresses, participation was close to 100 percent. A notable exception was Greta Garbo. Although the reaction of the industry to the war is a potentially fascinating story, and Hoopes has some splendid anecdotes, this book suffers from a warmed-over feeling. The first and biggest problem is Hoopes's working method: By his own admission, the entire book was gleaned from secondary sources,.

Marlene Dietrich, on Hitler’s death list for refusing to be his mistress, later remarked, I should have gone to him.

At Lena Horne’s USO show in Kansas, Nazi prisoners got front-row seats, but black American GIs were shoved in back.

Troublesome Presence: World War II Internment of German Sailors in New Mexico, A," by John Joel Culley, 279-295. Where's the Rest of Me, by Ronald Reagan, 40. White, Edward, 301.

During World War II, there was an internal treaty between Nepal and Britain about the mobilization of Nepalese soldiers. In addition to RNA troops, Nepalese fought in the British Gurkha units and were engaged in combat all over the world. Gurkha troops were part of the Allied occupation force in Japan. When Japan went to war with the United Kingdom in December 1941, the British presence was threatened in the Indian subcontinent. Britain deployed its troops in India to the Burma front. Nepalese battalions – Mahindra Dal, Sher, Kali Bahadur and Jagannath - were also deployed. These Nepalese battalions fought under the Allied Command.

In Five Came Back, he gives us something even more remarkable: the untold story of how Hollywood changed World War II, and how World War II changed Hollywood, through the director's lens. It is little remembered now, but in prewar America, Hollywood's relationship with Washington was decidedly tense.

Interweaving the reminiscences of numerous actors, actresses, studio heads, and others, an account of Hollywood during World War II chronicles USO tours, bond drives, and combat experiences

Based on secondary sources, this book provides a general survey of Hollywood actors who participated or performed for the troops during world war II. There is not deep research or details of their activities. Some aspects of service entertainment were ignored, for instance the special services units who performed in North Africa, India, and China. Sterling Holloway (who is not mentioned in the book at all), starred in an Army based entertainment troupe, "Hey Rookie," performed more that 130 times with a vaudeville type review. The performers were all in the regular arm, wore uniforms, and traveled in Army trucks. This group performed for General Eisenhower. General Patton attended also. The book has an abundance of photographs of the stars who were in the service. Unfortunately the book has no index. General readers can glean much from the book, but the researcher looking for more depth may be disappointed.

This was a really interesting book with information on the stars that joined the service during WWII. I thoroughly enjoyed it, except for the part where the author's political leanings were showing when he just had to berate Ronald Reagan. Other than that, excellent reading.

This book is apparently aimed at those particularly interested in the motion picture industry itself, its stars, and their activities immediately before and during World War II. The book covers a wide range of topics from life in Hollywood before the war, war movies, the "Hollywood Canteen," the creation of the United Services Organization (USO), the experiences of individual stars on bond drives, and the roles played by various stars on the home front and overseas. Chapter 8 specifically addresses the service of eight "Stars" who were in the military: Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Robert Montgomery, James Stewart, Sterling Hayden, Clark Gable, Henry Fonda, Tyrone Power, and Wayne Morris, but others are mentioned throughout the book.

This is essentially an insider's view of Hollywood during the war which includes numerous quips and quotes by the stars. It should be of interest to anyone having an interest in Hollywood and the motion picture industry during World War II.

Very interesting book. Provides a lot of information about Hollywood during the Second World War and the contribution of the entertainment industry to the war effort. Great characterizations. Lot of personal information about some of the biggest stars in America.
