Book by Taylor, Samuel Woolley. Samuel Taylor became a well-known writer, most famous for his stories that were eventually made into the Walt Disney movies about the "absent-minded professor" and "flubber". In this book, Taylor tells about his childhood and what it was like to grow up in one of the last polygamous Mormon families before that church stopped condoning polygamy. This is a fun and interesting read giving a personal eye-witness glimpse into an era that is now almost forgotten.

When Samuel W. Taylor wasn't busy living, he was busy writing, sometimes for Disney (The Absent-Minded Professor), sometimes for his family (The John Taylor Papers), and often for the world about his own people, the Mormons (Nightfall on Nauvoo, Heaven Knows Why).

Sam may well be the most successful Mormon author of all time; and over half a century spent spinning yarns, Sam's best story might be his own. His life story blossoms with rollicking tales of his Utah boyhood, his strong-willed mother, and his adventures as a writer making his way in the world. Taylor-Made Tales is fresh, funny, and like so many of Taylor's other works, a candid look at peculiar people.

I confess, I also have read this many times over the last 4 decades and have recommended it often. I just read it again today (last time was perhaps 10 years ago). I knew Sam Taylor when I was growing up in Redwood City. A brilliant very funny man who was, no surprise, much more popular in Redwood City, California than he was in Provo, Utah. For fiction even truer to reality, have a look at Nightfall at Nauvoo. At the time that was published, it involved sticking his neck out much further than his BYU articles about bootleggers on campus did.

My favorite writers include Twain, Pat McManus and Samuel Taylor. I pick up Heaven Knows Why and get a chuckle. I've given copies away and bought extras in case the world goes south on me. Great work.

So glad I was introduced to this book as a teenager - it planted a wonderful seed within myself to "chill out" about my religion and just enjoy its eccentricities!

I have recommended this book a hundred times . . . and there are very few books I've recommended that many times. It is a funny romp through LDS culture, with all of its quirks, turns, and misunderstandings. I wish I had a library filled with this much entertainment.

Ever since I read this book I've thought it would make a great theater production. The humor and abundant plot twists combined make it one of my favorite books. It's an entertaining read and I've recommended it to many friends.

Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. I read it in one afternoon. Sam Taylor is my mom uncle. I can remember her telling us stories about visiting him in California when she was a child and him visiting in Utah. It is fun, sad, and awakening, to read about my grandfather and other family I was never able to meet! The way that Sam writes made me feel as if I were right there with them. I am so grateful to be part of this family that he loved so much to document the way he did.
