Sometimes described as "Erma Bombeck in leather" Los Angeles writer Erika Schickel is sexier and hipper than the divine Erma, but just as side-splittingly funny as she shares her misadventures in marriage, pregnancy, and motherhood. It all begins with her discovery that unsafe sex with her hubby is hot-and impregnating. From Week 1 when Schickel's embryo is as small as a pinhead to Week 39 when baby morphs to the size of Marlon Brando, she finds out that motherhood doesn't change her mind or her irrepressible spirit (her body is another story). Erika still detests the SUV she calls her 4,299 pound mistake, she now accepts the life-altering power of a girdle when it helps her squeeze into a tight dress to rock out at a Patti Smith concert. Here she shares a decade of marriage and motherhood in a smart, outrageous, and laugh-out-loud book . . . perfect for anyone who's done time in a modern American family. "Witty, observant, and apparently fearless, Erika Schickel has just moved the modern mommy marker another notch forward" -Merrill Markoe, author and humorist

It was such a relief to read a "momoir" that I could so closely relate to on many levels. Of course, there were a couple chapters I couldn't identify with (one about "cats"-- which I hate-- and one about smoking pot-- which I don't), but it was still such a great read. While I don't have daughters (just one insane 2 year old son) it was fantastic to laugh at loud at universal truths of the strains of motherhood. It's obvious that Erika Schickel was meant to be two things in life: a mother and a writer.

Are you a trad-mom, an alterna-mom, a rad or bad mom? Perhaps you are prim and prissy, and if so you won't relate to this book. The rest of us will laugh, be shocked and muse over these honest tales of growing up. Erika is funny, she's hip, she's weird, she's normal, and she loves her daughters.

I've known the author for many years and am happy to say that when you read this book you're getting her real voice -- funny, observant, honest, curious and arresting. Everything a modern mom should be, relieving the pressure of child raising in ways most would never admit and so many could use. If you want a true and intelligent friend to help illuminate the moment-to-moment questions of life, this is the one for you.

Erika's writing makes you feel like you're no longer alone in the universe. The island of motherhood is now shore-accessable on a make-shift raft, crafted by Schickel out of hilarious prose, lashed together with hemp rope, and manned by a most skilled, if hairbrained captain. The waves will crash over that baby, and you'll fear for your life, but by God you'll laugh the whole way there.

This book is really fun. There's a story about the author and her friend (who are both parents of young children) going to a strip club and getting lap dances. Very funny. I was very entertained by this book.

this is not the helpful "you're not the boss of me, how to bratproof your child" by erica braun brown i was trying to get.

Caution: Ericka's book is NOT for the faint of heart. It sorta skirts the unspoken boundaries of motherhood like the wonderful Scary Mommy books/website. The author's brutal honesty is written in a very mesmerizing, naked prose. You WILL find yourself blushing while reading this book. Such a breath of fresh air. I might not engage in all of her habits and pursuits, but I did enjoy hearing about her adventures. Just food for thought for all of you moms out there who feel isolated and/or different and/or unconventional. The shock value is invaluable as she literally sticks it in the face of convention and does it her own way! I also enjoyed learning about her family of origin and relationship with her divorced parents and how the divorce affected her relationship with her sister. (Hey, do I get an award for using "her" one too many times in a single sentence??!!! Sorry for any offense you grammarians out there!). Anyways, I recommend this book to all open minded women (and men) who want to live vicariously through the eyes of one very strong woman.
