Both Siegal and Margolis have written other dog books on pet selection, training, and behavior. great tips in this book, "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things", for working with a young, new puppy.

Both Siegal and Margolis have written other dog books on pet selection, training, and behavior. While none of the ideas is especially innovative (consisting of analyzing the problem, looking for its roots, then using reconditioning techniques and obedience training methods to overcome the unwanted behavior), they are so clearly and positively presented that they will be most useful for a harried owner. Eager to give to the new owner.

Good Dog, Bad Dog, New and Revised: Dog Training Made Easy. I first read this book thirty years ago when I was learning how to train dogs. My instructor resommended this book. It is simple, humorous, and right on target. Preaches positive training, that is not only affective, but could well be applied to children.

I’ve got to say it: This is a good book, but it has some black and white photos, which are difficult to view because they lack clarity and depth.

This book needs to be reprinted with color photos, which have depth, and the book needs more of them.

The layout of the book is good, with bold sub-headings, which are also mentioned on the page tops, so that the reader can more easily find specific topic content.

The book has black and white photos, information boxes and tables.

Several problems that our 2 American Eskimo rescues exhibit are: 1. our male pulls on his leash, but he now is much better with daily leash training. Our female mouths and nips, because of dealing with a past owner. She is also improving. I have been using the ‘can’ technique by Margolis on page 142. I also use this same technique for our male when he barks (he’s a communal barker –common to dogs that are in rescue, with many dogs in one place).

This 1986 hard-cover book has a dust jacket.

The authors are Mordecai Siegal and Mathew Margolis, both authors of dog and cats books.

The publisher is Little, Brown and Company., Boston.

The book has 5 main sections.

Following that is: Acknowledgements and the Index.

However, 1 section that is a standard book section is missing, the Bibliography. This section is especially valuable to readers who are new to a topic. As such, the Bibliography should offer good examples of: magazines, books, films, videos, web sites, etc.

As a dog owner, my library is filled with all sorts of books on dogs. This is a good book describing the main canine behavioral problems and how to solve them.

This book advocates aversive techniques including the use of a choke chain and yanking them away from stimuli they react negatively to. Modern trainers insist that positive reinforcement is the best way to get the results you want, i.e. reward them for NOT reacting, but do not punish them if they do. When the dogs realize that every time they see the object that is causing them to react, they get punished, this makes them even more afraid of the object. I wish I could return this book, but then again that is one less book out there for someone else to buy and read and implement the techniques. I'm astonished this book has such high reviews given the negative training techniques within.

This book was an easy read and I read it in a couple of hours. It had great information that I have found very useful with my 16 week old puppy. I have learned that I need to be more patient and understand that some dogs will take a little longer to come around but it is a worth while endeavor. I have seen results with my pooch over the past week or so but it takes time, patience, and a full commitment to training your pooch to be well behave and an active member of your family. This book is not a quick fix but an aid to help you understand what has to be done to bring up a happy well adjusted pooch. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a dog or who is serious about training their dog to be productive and not destructive.
I really liked the format of this book and how it breaks up the reasons why a dog could be misbehaving. However, I'm not one to advocate jerking a choke collar because I believe there are less violent methods of correction--they do indicate hitting is bad. A better read would be Catch Your Dog Doing Something Right, or Reading the Dog's Mind, or any Stanley Coren book.
