If you are a beginner decorator, or a person just starting out in a new home, this book might overwhelm you. The reason I say this is because most beginners could never afford the expensive items and furniture photographed in this book.

The rooms photographed in this book are in the "classic" style--mostly.

The book does show the various color foundations in each room, though it does not go into great detail as to how to layer the colors themselves. For this reason, the reader may want to pick up a more "basic" book on COLOR first, such as "Color:The New Color Book" by CHRONICLE BOOKS, or "The Comfort of Color" by Susan Sargent.
Love Me
I found this book a very good basic. It gave you ideas in a way that the layman can understand and put to use. It is a decorating book after all, so there is only so much you can learn from it, especially in the style that you are interested in. Although you would have to have a fortune to decorate exactly as shown, you can replicate many looks closely.

This book is full of fabulous ideas and decorating for every room in your house.

I’ve got to say it: Paging through this book is a joy! Reading it is a lesson in decorating and expert photo staging. This is a color-photo dense book, demonstrating in multiple ways what the editor and her crew emphasize in the subtitle and ‘Contents’ section.

The expertly-framed and staged photos, the color palettes, the different styles all make this a book truly begging to be picked up, and looked at, and read.

A main idea in the ‘Introduction’, on page 6 is: “Decorating is individual and often eclectic, combining the best of styles, periods, patterns, and art to create personal, inviting homes….It’s about working with and enjoying your favorite colors, furnishings, collections, and art.”

One important decorating ‘basic’ that was also mentioned in the ‘Introduction’ is “that well-decorated rooms are never truly finished – they evolve over time as families and lifestyles change.” As such, this book showed how to incorporate older items with newer ones, to create a coherent re-editing of a room or home. A hotel room and even some furniture companies, for example, usually have/ present standard furnishings in a cookie-cutter-type format, but a home usually contains a mixture of disparate elements from disparate time periods, some of which may need to have paint removed, reapplied, or just stripped and stained. Other furniture may need to be reupholstered.

The section, ‘SouthwestSpirited’ (pages 58-65) is the only one section that touches on this but only in the theme of the southwestern genre – not in a truly eclectic editing in of disparate items from different time periods.

That said, on pages 140-141 we read: “Savvy decorators recommend purchasing quality-built used sofas from thrift stores or consignment shops rather than purchasing unsubstantial new sofas”….Decorators are also urged to ”Hunt for artwork and pottery at flea markets and antique shops to recreate the vintage looks” for collections of all kinds. (See pages 144-146 and 156-157.)

People want to get back to the ‘basics’ and have a home that doesn’t need to be totally redone every time a new furniture package comes on the market or a new design time period comes into existence (like Mid-20th Century [pages 22-27] or ‘Contemporary’, whose time period, by definition, constantly changes into what is current at the moment or publication).

While I’m not a great fan of painting walls anything other than an antique white because I want my walls to be canvases that make my furniture pop, I can and do appreciate some stunningly-curated wall colors. See the following pages: 16-19, 32, 46-49, 58-67, 72, 80, 114-119, 122-125. However, change any one of the items in the photo, like paint color, and the entire ‘mood’ changes.

The interplay of furniture, fabrics, paint, wallpaper, molding, ceilings, floors, and collections creates a home. Again, change any one of these items, and the entire dynamics of a room changes. When most people create a mood, they keep it.

The back cover of the book states that there are “more than 200 color photographs brimming with decorating ideas for every room….” There are also “decorator lessons on color theory, palettes, and practical applications”.

This 2001 soft-cover book has 160 semi-glossy pages, almost all of which contain multiple photos that are beautifully staged and photographed.

The editor of this book is Linda Hallam, but the book doesn’t give her background.

The publisher is BHG, Meredith Corporation, Des Moines.

This book has 6 main sections. Buy the book to see all of the sub-sections.
Section 1: Getting Started
Section 2: Finding Your Style
Section 3: Color
Section 4: Pattern
Section 5: Window & Wall
Section 6: Furnishings

Following these, there are:
a. Decorating Quick Tips
b. Index

This book should be a part of the libraries of every home-decoration fan. The copy of my book, however, doesn’t stay on its shelf for long because I usually have it on my coffee table and often page through it for enjoyment and ideas.

This is everything you might hope for in a basic decorating book. The first half is devoted to illustrating various styles of decorating and explaining how to make them work. The selection of motifs is quite eclectic (although not exhaustive) so there is something for everyone here. The remainder of the book discusses design elements such as colors, patterns, furnishings, window treatments, etc. The focus throughout is on giving concise, practical advice with over 200 color photos to support the text.
This is an easy read with a wealth of useful advice and a more than adequate number of pictures to help generate ideas. Want to know how best to showcase a collection? Trying to figure out which color to paint the walls to best highlight your wood furniture? The answers are here along with a great many other common issues.
If this book has a limititation, it is this. It is not an encyclopedia of decorating, it's a starting point. Since the title of the book is Decorating Basics, however, I do not consider this a flaw. For a modest price, you can get a great book to get you started on visualizing what kind of decor might work for you.
