In architecture, Art Nouveau was more a kind of detail than it was a style. As it moved through Europe, the Art Nouveau movement went through several phases and took on a variety of names. In graphic design, the movement helped to usher in new modernism. During the late 1800s, many European artists, graphic designers, and architects rebelled against formal, classical approaches to design. In France, for example, it was called "Style Moderne" and "Style Nouille" (Noodle Style).
In general it was most successfully practiced in the decorative arts: furniture, jewelry, and book design and illustration. The style was richly ornamental and asymmetrical, characterized by a whiplash linearity reminiscent of twining plant tendrils. Its exponents chose themes fraught with symbolism, frequently of an erotic nature. They imbued their designs with dreamlike and exotic forms.
Art Nouveau may go by many different names, but its look is unmistakable. Also known as Jugendstil, Stile Floreale, and Sezessionstil, the decorative e movement flourished in Europe throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Architects such as Hector Guimard and Antoni Gaudí became famous for their expressive, organic-inspired designs, which commonly featured colorful flourishes and detailed iron- and glass work.
