the book itself was in very good condition, it came on time, and I found it very entertaining, especially because it was written some time ago.

I had a copy of this book in the 90s and a friend in UT is probably still enjoying it :) It helped me a lot more than other books on organizing I had looked through in the bookstore.

Now it is 2011 and I looked at a lot of other books on organizing. I still love this one because it has chapters devoted to rooms and case histories. It feels more personal than a lot of the other similar books. This edition is updated and adds new ideas. My copy is the Kindle edition, and I love having it handy. I am now introducing my daughter to the concepts she teaches, such as taking a part of a problem area and working 15 minutes a day on it, then you put the unfinished work in a box to tackle the next day. I used her ideas successfully to organize our whole video collection, then I could look at that when I got discouraged.

The book has 3 chapters to introduce you to her system, then chapters for specific areas, and it includes coverage of the home office, which helps me with my book writer me. It's nice to be able to turn to the specific area and read a quick couple of pages or just skim for review, then tackle it. She really makes me think about what to keep and why I want to keep items. Then I'm able to let go of stuff I don't really need.

Pros:
- Organized with chapters like kids bedroom for quick use
- Focuses on organizing in small bites
- Ideas help me to get to work instead of worrying about whether I need things like important papers, and how to deal with the paper mess in my life
- Case histories help me tie the methods to real-life situations, and I see myself in some of them
- She helps with why we don't just throw away some of the things, and her suggestion of donating items feels better than filling the garbage can.
- Ideas to help sift out the things important to me, not just some cookie-cutter approach that doesn't fit everyone
- Help to make my own criteria of what's important and what's not helps me to make the decisions to let go of the things that aren't really important enough to me to keep
- Focus on my life and what I need rather than some standard to apply to all

Cons:
- Depending on you, some chapters won't apply, but I suggest reading them anyway. What appears not to apply to you at all might have ideas that apply to stuff everyone has lying around. Example: You may not have a home office but you have important papers like bills, tax records, instructions for items with warranty info, and bank statements. They need a little organizational love, too

- If you aren't the type of person who tends to collect things, this book may not speak to you well. The first three chapters may or may not attract you to the rest of the book

- If you are single and don't have kids, the whole chapter on organizing kids' rooms may turn you off. I suggest looking through the chapters with the idea of "what applies to me?"

It is hard to come up with any cons regarding this book. It introduced me to the idea of organizing things in my cluttered world. Her examples spoke to me because I am very disorganized. An organized person just needing some new ideas might not like this book, but I love it because it is more of a 'beginner' type of Organize-It book.

I'm rebuilding my library in digital format and was very happy to see this book updated and offered in digital format. I bought the original book and re-organized my life with it. Now I can go back for a refresher any time I want. The electronic references are few and dated but all the principals are flexible and sound.

This book is an overly-detailed, almost academic discussion of organizational theory. Some of the basic organizational principles include listing a project's "processes or system[s] into manageable parts" , breaking down projects into prioritizing projects by how aggravating they are, tackling the #1's first, etc. Her discussion of how to compose and analyze the daily to-do list is overly-detailed -- for example, calling a student's mother to determine why he didn't show up for class yesterday is an immediate task that just cropped up, while getting in touch with an equipment supplier is "a basic, medium range task." What does that mean?? And I don't think most of us struggle with figuring out what is really important and what isn't; what we need is something that will help us accomplish what is most important. The financial planning section is overly detailed -- assess income, analyze fixed expenses, prepare a budget, etc. I'm consulting a Getting Organized book because I need to get motivated and empowered to plow through the pile of clothes on the floor and the pile of papers on my desk -- This book is better-suited for folks who are already organized and want to be even more so. This book might be a good choice if you are already reasonably organized and are looking for detailed discussions of the processes that might enable you to become more organized in all aspects of your life. If you are currently at a lower level of organization, I recommend Don Aslett's books on clutter; for me, they have been much more readable and useful.

This is the book I always come to when I really want to get organized. She is good at keeping it up to date for our electronic age as well.

simple easy read, great tips
Whether you are an Oscar, a Felix, or something in between, there is something in this book you can use.

The book itself is neatly organized into sections about managing time, money, paperwork, and your home, and is indexed so that you can locate what you need to know without reading it from cover to cover.

There are step-by-step instructions for setting priorities and completing specific tasks--however, the basic organization methods outlined are very flexible, so that they can be applied to almost any untidy situation, ranging from the annoying (such as continually running out of shampoo, or not being able to find your favorite shirt) to the potentially catastrophic (you have to itemize your tax return, and you always misplace your receipts and canceled checks).

Even if you have it reasonably well together, this book can be quite helpful, since Ms. Winston also offers shortcuts for onerous tasks, suggestions for living within your means, and creative storage solutions--and who has enough time, money, or closet space these days?
