Tudor and Stuart Gardens explores the love of formality that characterised gardening in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the influence of Renaissance culture on British gardens. Intricate knot gardens and parterres, the structural use of topiary and hedges and the period's fascination with non-native plants influenced the evolution of British gardens over the following centuries.
Tudor House and Garden is a historic building, museum, tourist attraction, and Grade I listed building in Southampton, England. Established as Southampton's first museum in 1912, the house was closed for nine years between 2002 and 2011 during an extensive renovation. The house is located in Bugle Street, opposite St. Michael's Square, in Southampton's Old Town.
Tudor Gardens The Tudors followed Italian influence in creating gardens which mirrored the alignment of the house, creating a harmony of line and proportion that had been missing in the Medieval period. For the first time since the Romans left, sundials and statues were once more popular garden ornaments. But the most prominent contribution of the Tudors to gardening was the knot garden. Knots were intricate patterns of lawn hedges, usually of box, intended to be viewed from the mount, or raised walks. The spaces between the hedges were often filled with flowers, shrubs, or herbs.
