Books in the Series: 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse.

Books in the Series: 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse. 1,000 Food Art and Styling Ideas. of the Redwoods) assembled this collection of works by established studio artists as a source of ideas for crafters. - Library Journal, February 15, 2010.

Most "recycling other stuff for crafts" books give detailed instructions on how the project can be redone.

Written by my friend Garth Johnson and including several of my one-of-a-kind handspun yarns, 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse is a 'ers dream. Page after page of art and craft by some of the most, well, creative folks in Humboldt County, California, this coffee table tome will inspire the re-maker in you to turn discards into useful and beautiful items. Most "recycling other stuff for crafts" books give detailed instructions on how the project can be redone. I don't always like that because it takes away from the creative process.

Artists and crafters have always been recyclers, but for many, it has not only become a thrifty choice, it has become a moral imperative. 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse contains a cutting edge collection of the most inventive work being made with re-used, upcycled, and already existing materials.

Artists and crafters have consistently been recyclers, yet for plenty of, it has not just develop into a thrifty selection, it has turn into an ethical critical. one thousand rules for artistic Reuse encompasses a innovative choice of the main artistic paintings being made with re-used, upcycled, and already present fabrics.

When I first glanced through the book I thought interesting, but...It looked like just a bunch of photos of peoples creations (many of whih are pretty amazing) but I wanted more. Then I got to the back of the book and there was the rest of what I wanted. First a section that describes what each piece is made of (it is not always easy to tell, you won't believe what you can do with a plastic bag!) and then a list of each artist/artisan with contact information and websites if they have them. This was what I wanted! There are not directions to copy the creations, that is not what it is about, but it is full of inspirational ideas (and quite a few pieces I would not mind having and I have looked up the artist's websites). Also, as a note, I took the book to work (I work at an Art College)and the book got passed around between many people who were also amazed and inspired.

Thinking that it was a "how-to" book, I ordered this book based on my artist friend's recommendation. Instead, it turned out to be more of a photo-gallery type reference book. As I was going through the book, the wonderful memories of inspirational and mind-expanding visit to the Portland Museum of Contemporary Crafts (Oregon), Museum of Art & Design (New York), American Craft Council Fair (alternate crafts section) at Fort Mason (San Francisco, CA) came to my mind.

In every visit, I was fascinated and amazed with how ordinary or found materials can be repurposed, recycled, or even re-manufactured into an entirely different entity. I saw several of them again in this book, and from the same book, many more examples of material reuse from many different categories were shown: fashion, home accessories, book arts, mixed media, and interiors.

Each photo (1,000 of them) has a number and the name of the artisan. If one wants to know what materials were used, one will have to find it in the image directory at the end of the book using the number as the index. However, the image directory is a bit confusing and difficult to read because it was not in the expected columnar format.

Despite the shortcomings of the book's layout design and the misleading title, I have found it to be inspirational as it enables me to come up with more ideas for what I can use with my own found materials. And if I need more information, I can look up a list of resources in this book.

Overall, I find this book to be a good sourcing tool for scouts who are looking for exceptional or "green" items to be sold in crafts fairs, galleries or other retail venues. It is also an excellent idea-generating tool for those who want to create, design or maintain a "green" lifestyle by either recycling with found materials or buying the handcrafted objects from the artisans.

From the description, the reviews, and the e-sample, I knew this would not a how-to book. The presented items ARE cool and inspiring. But why are the photos so small? Why is there so little information about each piece on the page - what it is, a title, what materials are used, size, at least the same info given in any art book or exhibition catalog.

Yes, you can find a short list of the materials used in each piece at the back of the book (though I don't see the point of not putting the info on the page with piece). If you have the Kindle version, don't expect too much help from technology. Once you find the listings (they start at location 2870) , you can click the link back to the photo, which is nice (and a logical feature). But there's no link on the photo page to take you to the material listings page for the item. The Kindle page layout is also not very user friendly. For example, it would be nicer if there were chapter headings (or footings) so you'd know where you were if you land on a random page by simply browsing.

The jewelry is amazing, and I'll enjoy browsing the rest of the book. Great concept, wonderful and interesting items, but medicre presentation that doesn't showcase the items well or take good advantage of the technology. I probably will return it before my 7 days are up.

This is NOT a pattern book! No instructions for any of the items. But it is a great inspiration source! Just looking through it and wondering "How did they do that? Is that what I think it is?" is a lot of fun. Jewelry made out of Barbie faces?? Lawn chair made from a grocery cart? Take a look and go recycle something!

Ideas for Creative Use are just ideas. No explanation how anything is made, its good to get ideas, but not good as a how-to. Some artists' work is spread around on many pages, almost as filler, because the work is just another version of the same thing. My high school students look through it but don't learn what they need to do to actually make the work. A professional can easily see how the stuff was made just by looking at it, but don't get it if you need instructions because there are none.

All the books in the 1000, 500, 300 (whatever the number) books seem to be very well thought out, beautifully photographed and very inspriing. I have an entire library shelf dedicated to the books in the subjects that interest me. This one was very creative. It is, however, NOT A HOW-TO book. It is merely food-for-thought to inspire your own reuse, remake, recycling.

Hated it a s a craft book. It explained nothing on its pictures it featured. VERY MISLEADING. It serves better as an ART CLASS PROJECT BOOK - where people can appreciate the artistic value it contains. There is no directions or explanations for the amazing projects. GREAT photos. Very disappointed in the whole book. I believe I bought it from goodwill and I will DONATE it back.
Half of the ideas are meh, but it was worth it for the few that spoke to me. With Pinterest around though, I shouldn't have purchased it.
