This is an encyclopedia of embroidery techniques, aimed at the embroiderer who wants to learn a wide range of methods for use in modern work. As the book states whereas once most embroidery used just one technique these days a lot of work features mixed styles and of course some of this is done by machine. Like most craft encyclopedias this book is not aimed at the beginner, but more for the more experienced person who wants to widen their repertoire. A newcomer to embroidery would also get plenty out of this book however as it starts off by showing what you need to get and what is out there.

Both hand and machine embroidery are included, and all the main stitches are featured with photographs and diagrams of each one, with information on their history and traditional uses.

This book gives a good introduction to several different styles of embroidery

This book gives a good introduction to several different styles of embroidery. It cannot compare to the wonderful Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches but it comes in as a good second choice. Clear and easily understood instructions.

This book was alright when I first started embroidering. It shows you a ton of stitches from all types of embroidery, so you can find the type you want to learn. Only about 10% of the stitches in this book I found useful, and many of them didn't have the best pictures illustrating them. But I did really enjoy just trying out different types of stitches and seeing how stuff looked, it does explain them pretty well.

I ended up replacing this book though with Judith Baker Montano's Embroidery & Crazy Quilt Stitch Tool: 180+ Stitches & Combinations - Tips for Needles, Thread, Ribbon, Fabric - Left- & Right-Handed Illustrations. It's mostly about raised stitches and Brazilian embroidery, but was great for expanding on what I enjoyed about this book. It's also much smaller and actually fits in my sewing bag.

This Embroidery technique book is THE BEST EVER!! It has replaced another one I had been using because it is more detailed & easy to follow & refer back to. I even bought one for a couple of my friends as well!

This book is well worth it...well-presented and good selection of topics-needlelace, needle weaving, stump work, and a good gallery of artists' work.

This is a beautiful book, full of inspiring finished projects and gorgeous photos. If you want to be inspired, get this book. If you want to learn new things - get this book! Not only does it show various stitch samples and how to stitch them, but it shows possibilities and techniques. I love this book for it's inspiration and what it teaches. Great for all levels of stitchers.

I checked out another book by this author from the library. The book is no longer in print, so I was looking for other books by this author. It does have a selection of demonstrated embroidery stitches and some examples. But it is less thorough, less inspiring and has fewer pages than Embroidery / consultant editor Pauline Brown ; [conceived, edited and designed by Marshall Editions].

Beautiful book. This book not only showed me how to do many new stitches
It was lovely just to look at. I highly recommend this book.

I'm a guy non-sewer, but I do have an eye for art, and no matter how good other embroidery books may be, this one is a must-have for the comprehensive portfolio section in the back alone. What embroiderer can have too many examples of master works to inspire the next project?
A gem for embroiderers who like using their creativity more than following patterns. Brown does not only show many different stitches and techniques, but also, in the last chapter, beautiful photographs of the work of true needle artists. The feeling I get from this book is that I too, with a bit of practice and fantasy, can make such wonderful things. I reach for this book many times!
