William Greener was the first to make guns. After serving his apprenticeship with John Gardner in Newcastle upon Tyne he worked for Joe Manton, probably the best English gunmaker in the early 1800s. Like his father he wrote several books the most famous of which The Gun and its Development was published in 1881. W W Greener’s two sons Harry and Charles took over the business from their father in 1910 and ten years later the firm was incorporated into a limited company.

A timeless book. Greener's knowledge is staggering and the clarity of his writing makes even complex mechanical issues very clear.
If you like doubleguns and even the least bit of curiosity about them, then this book will provide hours of enjoyable and informative reading. Even in today's age of CNC technology it is fascinating to learn the antecedent technologies. Especially since many of the finest guns we own pre-date CNC and were all hand-made.
A truly remarkable book about truly remarkable mechanisms.

If you are one bit interested in weapons or the history thereof (especially guns), then this is the book for you. Even if you are not a gun person, this is simply a great history book. Besides the great contents the book looks great with its leather bound cover and gold edged pages. All in all, this book was a "must have" for me even though I didn't know it before I ordered.

It is sometimes difficult to get past the old terms and language used in this book, but it is detailed to say the least. Knowing that Greener was opinionated before cracking it open was helpful. I got this book hoping to learn more about the process of making damascus barrels and although not a quick read, I found it imformative. So far it is well worth the money and I haven't read 1/8th of the book yet.

A real classic! An absolute eye opener for modern shooters as to the skill levels attained in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century! This period was a golden period for gun development and gunmakers such as WW Greener were in the forefront of developments. In the modern age of mass production it is amazing to realise the extent the early gunsmiths went to in order to produce the "best" english gun. The information supplied in this book can only enrich readers and gun enthusiasts alike regarding all aspects of shooting and gun collecting. This book is a MUST for all serious gun enthusiasts!

This book had a lot of information. I love the fact that it started from the "beginning of time". Interesting pictures, facts, and general information regarding firearms. I did not realize that this book was written as long ago as it was. Love the pic of the Queen!
