Gary Griffith collected United States stamps for more than 30 years, and specialized in the stamps of the Series of 1922. His competitive exhibit, "The 2¢ Washington 1922," won 10 gold medals in United States competitions between 1988 and 2000, and was exhibited internationally in Tokyo in 1991 and in Paris in 1999.

Territories of the United States on stamps discusses commemorative postal issues devoted to lands that have been ceded to the nation or purchased by treaty in conjunction with both war and peace. Thirteen states have been created from colonial territories, two from independent republics, four from previous states in the Union, and an additional thirty-one from United States territories.

This stamp was in use for the shortest amount of time of all the low values of the series. Its replacement with a stamp honoring former President William H. Taft caused some controversy in 1930. Is your stamp United States Scott 594 or 596? Probably no. Until 1927, rotary press sheet and booklet stamps were processed on a bar-and-wheel perforator that applied gauge 10 perforations in both horizontal.

Is your stamp United States Scott 594 or 596? Probably not. These are the scarce (Scott 594) and rare (596) rotary press 1¢ green Benjamin Franklin stamps of 1924 with gauge 11 perforations both horizontally and vertically. In the book Linn’s United States Stamps 1922-26, Gary Griffith offered an estimate of 51,000. Until 1927, rotary press sheet and booklet stamps were processed on a bar-and-wheel perforator that applied gauge 10 perforations in both horizontal and vertical directions simultaneously, which made them easy to distinguish from flat-plate sheet stamps that had gauge 11 perforations.
