Great way to learn about a lot of the great artists (authors, directors, actors, and playwrights) of the 20th century.

Thirty-six of the most creative and influential contemporary writers, filmmakers, and performers discuss their work at length with the prominent New York Times book critic and culture reporter. Great way to learn about a lot of the great artists (authors, directors, actors, and playwrights) of the 20th century.

Kakutani's insights rarely astonish, but she presents the obvious clearly (. of Billy Wilder, ""More often than not, his movies involve elaborate deceptions ending in loss of innocence""), and salts most of the sketches with extensive fragments of conversation between herself and the subject. An elegant, light, enjoyable survey. THE POET AT THE PIANO: Portraits of Writers, Filmmakers, Playwrights, and Other Artists at Work. By. Get weekly book recommendations

But California in the sense of the West. The old West where Manifest Destiny was an almost palpable notion that was somehow tied to the land and the climate and one's own family-an unspoken belief that was passed down to children in stories and sayings. I haven't read the whole book yet. A friend found a copy at Powell's in Portland and is sending me a few chapters at a time. They're all fascinating, but I have to say the essay on Ingmar Bergman is the most insightful of the many books and articles I've read about him. Many, if not all, of the essays are based on face-to-face interviews and feel as current as if they were written yesterday, not twenty years ago. I hope it will be on Kindle soon.
