World War II was the only great submarine war. The British and the Japanese discovered how vulnerable they . With the Empire on the verge of starvation, atomic bomb attacks on Japan several weeks later pushed the tiny empire over the edge. The result was surrender. The British and the Japanese discovered how vulnerable they were to attacks on their vital sea lanes. Now, simulator submariners can look over the shoulders of the men who made it possible-listen to their private thoughts, learn from their mistakes and successes. But most important, simulator submariners can get to know and understand genuine American heroes.

During the Cold War, the . Navy developed two different types of nuclear-powered submarines. The first was a sub that could launch nuclear missiles at other nations, called a Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine, also known as an SSBN or "boomer. The other was an Attack Submarine, signified as SSN, or "fast attack length.

On December 7, 1941 the order was issued to the U.S. Navy: "EXECUTE UNRESTRICTED AIR AND SUBMARINE WARFARE AGAINST JAPAN" On that order, the subs flooded out of Pearl Harbor and towards the Japanese Empire. Those that returned came back with tales of unbelievable heroism, hard won victory, crushing defeats, faulty equipment, deadly mistakes, unexpected humor, and haunting decisions. Starting with the story of the brave little S-44 - It was very questionable as to whether or not she would even survive the crossing to Japanese waters. Despite the fact that she left a continuous oil slick wherever she went, she carried the fight to the enemy and sunk the 8800 ton Kato, the first Japanese warship to be sunk by a lone submarine. Continuing with stories from the Silversides, Wahoo, Trigger, Harder, Bowfin, and finishing with all five war patrols of the unmatched Tang, here are all the details and insights, straight from the men who fought the battles.

This is a small book in size, written in double-space font, which generates about 100 words per page covering forty World War II pacific ocean submarine patrols. The effect is a book that reads like the battle reports transmitted to headquarters while still on patrol. The reports contain the absolute minimum detail to cover the action.
The book does cover the exploits of the brave commanders who used innovative tactics to attack the Empire of Japan's merchant marine and navel escorts. Total tonnage of each patrol is tallied but no enemy ship names were mentioned. There is no research other than official wartime naval records. There are no footnotes or bibliography or index. There is one map of the key ocean straits where sub patrolled but reduced in size to be almost unreadable. There are several diagrams that illustrate the various submarine maneuvers toward a target but they are also reduced size which distracts from their usefulness. There is a glossary of terms.
I have given the book to my twelve year old grandson. It is suitable for a 7th grade reading level.

I thought I'd get decent recaps of the best sub patrols of WWII. What I got was the "Cliff's Notes" account, an account that was poorly edited with numerous typos and missing words. Read "Pig Boats" or "Run Silent, Run Deep" for accounts that do a much better job of making you feel like you we're there; helping you feel the incredible stresses borne the brave young men of the Silent Service. Spend your $ on them.

The kindle edition of this book has many typos. There are many extraneous words in the descriptions of the torpedo attacks and omissions of pertinent words to fully flesh out the accounts. The stories are basically factual but lacking in much of the detail which makes a truly great book.

This was just assembled battle reports. Very interesting for me but would bore my wife. History buffs will find this interesting, also.

Really enjoyed the look at submarines of WWII. This book includes the stories of individual commands and patrols of key subs throughout WWII.

The author's quick summarization of the patrols makes one think that sinking enemy vessels was an easy task ...... shoot, bang, sunk ........ he doesn't write about the difficulties of submarine combat patrols ......... the book comes across like a super-hero comic book
Awesome reading!
