Dr Stephen Hart, Dr Russell Hart, Robert O'Neill. This engrossing story examines the pivotal Northwest Europe campaign of World War II. The fighting pitted the Western Allies against the Germans during 1944 and 1945. The harrowing D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, and the speedy charge through western and central Germany in the final weeks of the war are excitingly examined. This attractive book includes detailed full-color maps of important battles and military tactics. A chronology and profiles of a soldier and a civilian are also included.

This book examines the seminal Northwest Europe campaign of the Second World War. This hard-fought campaign conducted by the Western Allies against the Germans during 1944-45 represented, for the former, the decisive theatre of the entire Second World War. From the desperate and risk-laden D-Day landings on 6 June 1944 to the rapid charge through western and central Germany in the last weeks of the war, American, British, Canadian and French military forces took on and defeated the German military. This victory ensured that the scourge of Nazism was finally expunged from the face of Europe.

This final volume of the Essential Histories covering World War II details the last two years of the war, mostly from the invasion of Normandy until the surrender of Germany and the end of the Third Reich. During these last years of the war, it becomes obvious that the Germans were fighting for a lost cause, something more and more German generals, soldiers, and citizenry accepted as time wore on. With the Russians’ inexorable advance in the East and the failure to stop the landings in Normandy, the writing was on the wall for the German Nazis. Indeed, it became clear as Germany folded that the broader strategic battle was between Western Allies and Russia for who could claim more ground (and future influence). One of the more fascinating aspects of this volume was the description of the German armed forces desperation to surrender to Anglo-US forces rather than the Russians, even offering favorable concessions to Britain and the US prior to surrendering. This volume only briefly covers the atrocities committed by the Nazis against Europe’s Jews, more focused on the battles and tactics of the military struggle (as expected for EH). It also highlights the bickering and shouldering for prominence between US and Britain (Montgomery) as the invasion proceeded, with Britain trying to maintain prominence in the face of growing US dominance.
