A fierce rebellion by Albanian guerrillas demanding rights equal to those of the dominant Slavs in Macedonia killed and wounded hundreds of people, many of them innocent civilians, and raised fears that the crisis would suck in surrounding Kosovo, Albania, Bulgaria and Greece.

John Phillips elucidates very clearly and objectively the complexities of the Macedonian war, with some fine . The book talks about what the cover says it does: warlords and rebels. A good book for anyone invested in the Balkan conflicts.

International intervention brought an uneasy halt to the blood-letting last summer, but hardline Macedonian nationalists have blocked full implementation of the peace agreement and there are now fears that the National Liberation Army will renew its campaign, leading to more ethnic cleansing in the heart of Europe.

A good, medium level overview of the situation in an area which has not recently been in the news. Worth buying.

The book is unbiased piece of history from the last conflict on Balkan. Very good insight in the history of Macedonians and Albanians. Powerfull description of the events before and during the conflict. There is not many books on this subject and that will increase the historical value of this book.

Clever

Macedonia has a long, complex and contested history, but it seems that, paradoxically, "current events" are the most pertinent. Macedonia probably appeared above the horizon for the average citizen outside of the Balkans in the 1990s, and then it was probably tempting to just put the country in the same category as Bosnia. Phillips, in his thorough profile of the country, distinguishes Macedonia's recent development as an independent country from the history of its neighbors, and he does an excellent job of relating local, Macedonian issues to larger, Balkan and European problems. The book is readable and very informative, and visitors to the area will find it very valuable.

A book of many speculations, desinformation and anti Macedonian propganda, supporting the idea of albanian islamic fundamentalists and separatists.

Islamic Terrorist infiltrated from neighbouring countries are presented as freedom fighters and rebels, macedonian police protecting the civilins shown as warlords and paramilitary.

Looks like the author just wanted to write and sell a book, lack of knowledge for past and present history, not based on facts but speculations.

I feel sorry for buying this book, could purchase better book instead.

Bludworm

The author tried to write about something that he does not understand. It is more than obvious that he does not have a basic knowledge on the region, history and the relationship between the ethnicities. Furthermore I knew him personally and I am surprise that he is trying to describe events that he did not attend. He was in Macedonia ONLY couple of times during the conflict and most of the events are work of his imagination. I challenge him to talk and debate publicly for the book. It i so sad that a publisher publishes a book full of lies without checking the facts.

This book is a keeper about Macedonia, and I think it's the only one about modern Macedonia. The book talks about what the cover says it does: warlords and rebels. This book gives sight into the unique intricacies about modern Macedonia and talks a little about the conflict in Kosovo, 1999-2001 timeframe. The book goes into the Macedonian-based UCK (KLA - Kosovo Liberation Army) that crossed the border and operated as a combatant force during the war. A good book for anyone invested in the Balkan conflicts.
