The Excavation of an Oval Barrow beside the Abingdon Causewayed Enclosures. The excavation of an oval crop mark close to the Abingdon causewayed enclosure showed a complex sequence of development, starting with a rectangular ditched enclosure and most probably ending with an oval barrow of a type with parallels elsewhere in lowland England.

A previously unknown Bronze Age monument has been discovered hidden .

A previously unknown Bronze Age monument has been discovered hidden in woodland in the Forest of Dean following an airborne laser scan. The ritual monument, known as a ring cairn, dates back to about 2,000 BC. It consists of a circular bank with several small limestone standing stones on top. Archaeologist Jon Hoyle, who found it, said it was the only site of its kind known about in Gloucestershire, and was a "very significant" discovery. The discovery is featured in a new book by Mr Hoyle - Hidden Landscapes of the Forest of Dean. You may also be interested in: Pub regular, 89, 'thrilled' as locals fix up home.

Excavation was undertaken at Barrow Hills, close to Abingdon cuasewayed enclosure, in 1983-1985 prior to development over the Early Bronze Age barrow cemetery. Evidence was recovered on the ceremonial and funerary use of the complex from the early Neolithic to at least the Middle Bronze Age, including the recovery of ring ditches, Neolithic pits, flat graves, pond barrows, and an Early Bronze Age cremation cemetery. Earlier salvage excavations and early reconnaissance of the site are discussed, as well as the wider burial and funerary significance of the site. Post-excavation analysis is described in detail. Its aims were to investigate the structure, chronological sequence and use of the site; the funerary, ceremonial and domestic activity; to place the archaeological finds in a landscape context; to look at artefact deposition and assemblage composition; and to compare the Barrow Hills complex with other sites. Comprehensive and well-illustrated.
