The book is entirely compiled from non Indian sources. This leaves out the most valuable narrative, the voice of the citizens of Vijaynagar, out of the narrative. This is a huge drawback. Most of the narratives on the warfare is from muslim sources. The Vijaynagar empire has fought muslims on multiple front and through many decades. The narrative of the adversary might not be a comprehensive one, i hope the author realises that. No pictures either. This is more of a book for academics and researchers, who might include this from among the many other sources to refer to, to get the whole picture. Definitely not for a lay person like me who is interested in history just because.

The book is a good read for someone who has little to no knowledge of the Vijayanagar empire. It definitely leans heavily on foreign sources, but that could be a result of the relative lack of local historical documentation given the complete destruction of the empire's artifacts and relics that often tend to chronicle history. The book is an easy read (the first part), and makes a genuine and largely successful (in my view) attempt at mapping out the chronology of the battles, births, coronations and deaths of the key members of the dynasties involved. That said, the book does at times, turn a little dry especially when the author puts takes off his storyteller hat and puts on his historian hat. All in all, this is probably one of the few english books on the VIjayanagar empire available on Amazon, and definitely worth a read attempt.
