This book is chock-full of good information and great history. It can be challenging and dry to read at times. Some issues are presented in a very in depth way but some are skimmed over. I guess there has just been so much going on in NC that the author had to pick and choose how and what he detailed. Over-all, for a college level textbook, it did the job.

Easily readable yet complete and informative. Probably one of the best-written history books I've ever read.

I needed this book for a course that I had last semester and found it to be very easy reading and would recommend it to anyone required to read it for their understanding of the past history.

This was a gift for an avid reader and history buff! He's also a tar heel and was very excited to receive it. Was used but in good conditions and I had no problem giving it as a gift.
I chose the high rating because the author, WILLIAM POWELL, CONTINUTES TO GET THE FACTS OF NC HISTORY CRAMMED INTO A SINGLE VOLUME THAT IS READABLE. HE IS CONCISE AND YET GIVES WHAT OTHERS DO NOT: A LIST OF THOSE WHO GOVERNED THE STATE. MY CONCERN HAS BEEN AND CONTINUES TO BE THAT VERY LITTLE ATTENTION IS PAID TO WOMEN AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE STATE'S HISTORY, AND, OF COURSE, HE LACKS A GRASP OF SOCIAL HISTORY AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE MINORITIES, BEGINNING WITH AMERICAN INDIANS AND FOLLOWINGTHROUGH TO THE SLAVES AND FREE MEN AND WOMEN WHO CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO THE RICH HISTORY OF THE OLD NORTH STATE. ALTHOUGH SOME READERS CRITICIZE HIS FAILURE TO ANALYZE THE FACTS HE SO PERSISTENTLY HAS UNCOVERED, THIS READER DOES NOT. MANY INSTRUCTORS WILL APPRECIATE THE RAW FACTS, AS A HAT RACK, AND CAN ADD TO THE ACCOUNT BY SUPPLEMENTARY READINGS, ETC, THE VOLUME IS UNSURPASSABLE FOR THE FOUR HUNDRED YEARS IT COVERS AND IT IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY ALIKE.THE BOOK IS A CLASSSIC AND CAN BE AUGMENTED BY MONOGRAPHS TO MAKE UP THE PROBLEMS MENTIONED ABOVE. I RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY.
