In this masterly biography, Warren M. Billings offers the first full-scale treatment of Berkeley's life, revealing the extent to which Berkeley shaped early Virginia and linking his career to the wider context of seventeenth-century Anglo-American history.

This is a good book to have for those really interested in Va history in the 17th century. The author provides a very detailed look at Berkeley's life, and fills in with general info where actual facts and letters are missing. Too much is on topics other than the forging of Va, as we get a lot of English court life, etc. The prose is dry, and there narrative is dull. The author also pays very little attention to slavery in Va at this time. American Indians get short shrift here too, esp considering how important they were in Va's early decades. This is a serious flaw to the book. Moreover, Bacon's Rebellion is also not given enough consideration.
Legend 33
I liked reading about Berkeley's time at Oxford, his home Green Springs plantation where he began a mini "agricultural revolution" in the colony, his teamwork with the General Assembly and promotion of "free trade" and, of course, Bacon's Rebellion. I didn't like the fact that the narrative dragged on and on, providing us with much unnecessary information, in my opinion. I am not interested in the process of silk worm farming, for instance. All in all perhaps the best book out there concerning this man.
