The term liaison aircraft is applied to an unarmed and unarmored single engine airplane characterized by low horsepower and light wight. By design this type of aircraft is particularly well adapted for observation, reconnaissance and general utility service blind the front lines or when unopposed by ho tile air raft or anti-aircraft fire. Of primary importance to the ground forces is the ability of this type aircraft to operate from relatively small, unprepared fields or roads. Minimum maintenance requirements are an outstanding feature of liaison aircraft. Two models of liaison aircraft were.

This book is a detailed look at how the Artillery Air Section of a US Army Headquarters functioned during the Second World War in Europe. It relates how its Air Observation Post aircraft were procured, crewed and operated, as recorded by the officer responsible for such matters. In this instance the HQ was that of Ninth US Army, and the officer concerned was the late Lt Col Robert M Leich. As Artillery Air Officer, Leich maintained a Daily Journal, and this is the principal source on which this book is based.

This book is a detailed look at how the Artillery Air Section of a US Army Headquarters functioned during WW II in Europe. Ken Wakefield was born in Bristol in 1928 and is married with three grown up children. After serving with the Royal Air Force and RAF Volunteer Reserve, he became an airline pilot, retiring after 27 years service as a Senior Captain with British Airways.

Ninth US Army Light Aircraft Operations in Europe 1944-45. This book is a detailed look at how the Artillery Air Section of a US Army Headquarters functioned during the Second World War in Europe.

From the dustjacket: "In total some 3,000 American liaison aircraft - mainly Piper L-4 Cubs and Stinson L-5 Sentinels - served in Europe, yet no in depth account of their activities has ever been published. Although unarmed and unarmoured, they were used extensively on operational missions by both the USAAF and Army Ground Forces. With the USAAF in Europe they carried out low level reconnaissance and front line courier duties with nine liaison squadrons of the Ninth Air Force; this book relates in detail the activities of these units for the first time. With Army Ground Forces, liaison aircraft served as Air Observation Posts with the Field Artillery; in this capacity it has been said that a single Air OP, controlling the fire power of an entire Division, could bring a greater weight of explosives to bear on a target than any other aircraft of the Second World War. ?With the exception of the atomic bomb carrying B-29 Superfortress, no other single aircraft had the destructive capability of the diminutive Piper Cub."

Got this for my World War II father. He couldn't believe I could find this book. Excellent condition, great pictures.

My father was a Liaison Pilot during WWII and flew these aircraft. It provides me with an insight of what he went through during that time.
I'm glad I bought it.

Before helicopters, after finding that tethered balloons did did not provide enough information, lightplanes were incorporated with artillery units. Proponents used Army maneuvers of 1941 to demonstrate usefulness of the 'Grasshoppers'. Carrying a SCR 610 radio and observer or moving people and mail to widely spread units, The Army knew they were valuable. 'Two per Artillery Battalion and two per Division Artillery HQ' were approved. Howerver, they were often a target of the enemy (as during Operation Market-Garden):
'...The operation in Holland was not a whole lot different from previous operations, except we were in the Germans' back door and we had more air attacks, including the first by jet aircraft. We were also subjected to more firing from Nebelwerfer and 88-mm guns.'...Fighter aircraft also became a problem; with the Cubs in the air from dusk to dawn the Germans couldn't move without being spotted, so the Cubs were attacked many times by fighters and AA fire.'
Great pictures of field conditions, wrecks, use of autobahns for operations, primitive refuelling methods. Good maps of locations where grasshoppers flew.
Good appendices: Different Liason models used by Army, The Fifth US Army units that had liaison planes, Third US Army units, Seventh US Army units, Ninth US Army units with planes, pilots and losses between June '44 and April '45, pictures of Generals and grasshoppers, aircraft colors, camouflage and markings.

If you only buy one book on Grasshoppers (small light aircraft used in WWII and Korea by the AAF and Army Field Forces), you have to buy this one! This is the definitive book on Liaison aircraft, from which all others will be measured. Kenneth Wakefield has collected scads of outstanding and clear pictures of L-1s, L-2s, L-3s , L-4s and L-5s. He covers their service in an entertaining and logical flow. But the pictures alone make this book worth 5 times what you will pay.

If you are interested in Liaison Aircraft in WWII, or would like to understand their role, this is the book you must buy.

I bought this book years ago, and still take it out and look at it about every other week. Yes, its that good.
