In all the early histories of the American Colonies, in the stories of Indian life and the delineations of Indian character, these children of nature are represented as savages and barbarians, and in the mind of a large portion of the community the sentiment still prevails that they were blood-thirsty, revengeful, and merciless, justly a terror to both friends and foes. Children are impressed with the idea that an Indian is scarcely human, and as much to be feared as the most ferocious animal of the forest.

A great look at Iroquois and Tuscarora culture and how interaction with Europeans changed it irrevocably. But the stories about the Iroquois and the Tuscarora Indians is absorbing and meaningful. I'm glad I read this book. Shelves: a-classic, education, history-books, travel, adoption, family, friendship, law, medicine, native-americans. Jjaekley rated it liked it Oct 09, 2014. Andrew J. Walker rated it it was ok Sep 07, 2014. Luz rated it really liked it Mar 25, 2018. Christopher Pettus rated it really liked it May 16, 2015.

If someone is interest in the histories of great Indian tribes, I recommend this book as one of the few you should read.

For someone who wants to get to the real stuff, this book cuts through the hype and fluffery of many books, and gets to the reality inherent in the legends, stories, and traditions of the Six Nations. I needed to understand more of this wonderful and rich culture while keeping the beauty of the traditional legends, and this book was just what I needed. 2 people found this helpful.

Elias johnson, A native tuscarora chief. A book about Indians!" who cares anything about them? This will probably be the exclamation of many who glance on my little page. I thought, at first, of only giving a series of Indian Biographies, but without some knowledge of the government and religion of the Iroquois, the character of the Indians could not be understood or appreciated. I enter upon the task with much distrust. I have read many of the Histories, and have longed to see refuted the slanders, and blot out the dark pictures which the historians have wont to spread abroad concerning us. May I live to see the day when it may be done, for most deeply have I learned to blush for my people.

Valuable piece of research and historical record. Eye witness accounts gave excellent insight into the consciousness and issues faced during different time periods. Especially that of Handsome Lake’s grandson.

This is a great book. It is awesome

Informative, but extremely biased and somewhat boring. Really naive, given multiple accounts of 1700's, etc... even so, I appreciate its perspective.

Although I did not like the term Savages cause I have Iriquois Indian within me, I found the book very informative and interesting.

This book offered great information, which I used to write a history report. If someone is interest in the histories of great Indian tribes, I recommend this book as one of the few you should read.
Was not quite what I was expecting. It is a very detailed account/history taken from legal documents that became quite cumbersome. It was more of a legal treatsie than anything else.
