One of the most conscientious early explorers of Mesa Verde, where Chapin Mesa is named in his honor, mountaineer and amateur archaeologist Frederick Chapin reported his discoveries in this late-nineteenth-century work, which includes interpretations of the region's archaeology and history that are still valid today.

Well written and very interesting. I wish I could have seen the country as he and the other late 1800 early 1900 authors did.

This review is for a reprint by Arizona Press, 1988, with a forward by Robert Lister. Chapin was an Eastern mountaineer who somehow made two trips to the Mesa Verde area in 1889 and 1890 (Lister's introduction gives biographical background). The Wetherills guided Chapin to many of the cliff dwellings; he did little excavation but took photographs. The original publication contains quite a few (based on references in the text), but the Arizona reprint omits them. His description of his travels in the canyons lists names of the tributary canyons, but there is no map to show where those are. Some of the book concerns his mountaineering on the first trip (the text doesn't distinguish between the two trips to Mesa Verde; perhaps all of it is based on the first trip). Chapin also did a thorough literature review and summarizes what had been published, some of which we now know is wrong. The attitudes of Anglos toward the Hopi and other Native Americans makes interesting reading, if sometimes offensive. In summary, interesting reading, but the original (with photos) would be much more informative.

Huh? That's not a "synopsis" and this is not a "scarce antiquarian book" ... it is a modern reprint.

Due to the age of the original it was photocopied from, it may contain photocopies of imperfections such as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed pages.

This work IS culturally important, and is readily available in economical alternate new and used paperback formats, check ISBN 0816510520 The Land of the Cliff Dwellers
