Pennsylvania Railroad Diesel Locomotive Pictorial Vol. 04: Baldwin Cab & Transfer Units. Author(s): John D. ISBN: 978-1881411178. Put me on the Waiting List. This book is the fourth in a series that documents the various types of diesel-Electric Locomotive operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Each book includes a roster, area assignment, and specifications for each model covered. The purpose of this series is to provide a selection of photographs to show the locomotives as an observer would see them in everyday service.

Locomotive classification on the Pennsylvania Railroad took several forms. Early on, steam locomotives were given single-letter classes. As the 26 letters were quickly assigned, that scheme was abandoned for a more complex system. This was used for all of the PRR's steam locomotives, and - with the exception of the final type bought (the E44) - all electric locomotives also used this scheme.

The Pennsylvania Railroad’s slogan was Standard Railroad of the World. While this book had very good photo examples of most prominant Pennsy locomotives, there were still some important engines missing. Often referred to as the Pennsy. The cover illustrates the best color picture of the entire book.

The Baldwin Locomotive Works was one of the most powerful and successful builders during the steam era. Learn why this did not hold true during the transition to diesels. During the railroad industry's first century, the 1800s, Baldwin produced thousands of early steam locomotive designs such as the 4-4-0 American, 2-6-0 Mogul, and 2-8-0 Consolidation. Baldwin, however, also built other locomotive types prior to the diesel era such as steam turbines and even electric locomotives, the latter of which were in conjunction with the Westinghouse Electric Company.
