Louise Southerden (Author), Layne Beachley (Foreword)

Louise Southerden (Author), Layne Beachley (Foreword). A surfer and writer from Sydney, Australia, Southerden speaks from the point of view of a woman who taught herself to surf without how-to guides and magazines to aid her. She learned the sport comparatively late in life, at age 24, and at a time when there were more sharks in the water than women. She wore wetsuits designed for men, surfed at non-crowded breaks at undesirable times and had no female pros to model her riding after.

The world's first-ever surfing guide for girls, Surf's Up has now been fully revised and .

Louise Southerden brings her love of surfing to every page, offering insights into the fascinating world of surfing sub-culture and a welcoming hand to every wannabe wahine. Encouraging and empowering, Surf's Up is a book no surfer girl should be without.

1907: Surfing comes to the United States Surfing officially graced the shores of mainland America in July 1907 when Hawaiian beach boy George Freeth started giving paid surfing demonstrations at Redondo Beach and Venice Beach, California. Although he wasn’t the first person to surf in California-a handful of Hawaiian princes who were attending military school in California had demonstrated surf sliding in Santa Cruz as early as 1885-it was Freeth who really ignited surfing in America’s consciousness.

This is cheesy, I know, but this book brings me joy. I just started surfing this summer and was constantly asking tons of questions. This book lays out all you want to know. I got up to "turns" which I'm by far no where near yet but enjoyed the 2/3rds I read. I'm definitely still a noob but I see things now going out I didn't notice those first few days to look for.

I felt a little cliche reading a book for girls, gotta say, but the tips ARE helpful. I have thick curly hair. YES putting conditioner in does help me detangle later! Just stupid things like that where you want to roll your eyes that it's towards girls but you actually find the tips really useful.

This book is great! It really helped my confidence and I love that there are girl-specific questions answered in it. I reference it on the way to the beach often just to help pump up my knowledge and esteem before I hit the waves. The only thing is that I wish the area on catching waves from the outside was a little more detailed.

Not just for girls, but a great way to get the basics of surfing, good read and I've lent it out to several friends.

I found this book to very useful and fun to read. It not only explains the sport of surfing but also introduces the reader to some of the great women surfers around the world. A must read for any gal thinking about venturing into the sport.

Best book for beginners I've ever seen, not just for girls.

This book is the most detailed guide I've found for surfing. The Surf Diva guide is also very good but not as detailed and informative as this book. I highly recommend it.
Buzatus
The book is a great intro for the beginner surfer. It packs in a lot of info and is much more informative compared to other surf books that I purchased. It contains info on websites for additional information, and on surfing clubs. You can tell that the author is enthusiastic and loves surfing.
Great book if you are a female surfer! Gives you all the basics. Easty to read and understand.
