we also have the baby book by sears which i also find extraordinary. i feel this book is more of a book i read cover to cover and will go back to, while the other book i use for reference when certain questions arise. both are wonderful and i highly highly recommend them especially if you are attachment parenting. Nighttime Parenting advocates breastfeeding on demand and sharing sleep in a family bed (more commonly referred to as co-sleeping). It is also generally know as the attachment parenting style and goes hand in hand with baby wearing. I personally understand the appeal of all these methods, and believed that I would use them successfully with all my children.

as a new parent with an infant who doesnt sleep i am constantly feeling like i am doing something wrong. sears has great suggestions and writes in an easy to read fashion. i find his work comforting as he stresses that if it is working for your family then it is right. i no longer feel guilty breastfeeding my baby to sleep or that i will spoil him or be the cause of bad habits. i feel like co- sleeping with my baby is comforting for him and he will outgrow it when he is ready. i appreciate that sears says a need that is met is no longer a need. if my baby needs extra snuggles at night and wakes often my cuddling him helps him no longer have that need.

Our previous pediatrician told us that when our baby turned 6 months, it was time to let her cry it out so we would all sleep through the night. I can't believe I actually listened to that garbage. It went against everything I feel as a mother. That may work for some children, but it did not work for mine. She didn't give up like he said she would, she kept crying and crying and crying. He told us we would need to keep trying and after a while, she would get the point. I can't listen to my child sob and give her the message that I don't care until she gives up on my being there for her. It doesn't feel right to me. I only asked for medical advice from her doctor, not parenting advice. Being told I HAD to do something made me feel guilty when it wasn't working. Who needs that? Then some friends of mine suggested that I read this book. It reinforced my belief that I should trust my instincts as a mother. It explained the science of infant sleep and why crying it out does or does not seem to work. I love that it is pro co-sleeping and explains how to do so safely. I had always let people make me feel bad for decisions I make as a parent that I feel are best for my child. Never again. I had a very difficult, long labor and ended up having a c-section. Co-sleeping made it easier to breastfeed my child and helped me get the rest I needed to recover. We still co-sleep and it works out great for us. I know it's not for everyone, but we have no tears at bedtime and our daughter sleeps peacefully through the night knowing that we're nearby if she needs us.

This was a gift from my mom to be before the arrival of our daughter, and it was extremely helpful. Dr. Sears has worked with thousands of moms in his practice, and what he shares makes perfect sense. He also looks at several scenarios, as he recognizes there are different choices for different families, with appropriate recommendations. I loved learning more about attachment style parenting, which felt natural to me and the best option for our daughter. She is the happiest baby we've ever met, wakes up smiling and happy! Other people comment on how happy she is, and I tell this it's in part because she has her needs met during the day AND at night, and always feels safe and secure. Daddy approves as well, and sees the results that sharing the bed has it's major advantages!

This is a very informative book - it really helped me to understand the physiology of infants and why they sleep and wake in the manner that they do. This book was also very encouraging and supportive of Co-sleeping, which is how our family sleeps. This would make a great starting point for anyone considering Co-sleeping, or anyone frustrated with their child's sleep problems after using some of the more common "sleep training" methods popular in the USA today. I got a lot from this book.
My one complaint, however, is that there really needs to be more practical information on making Co-sleeping work. I'd like to see a book with more information on the daily ins and outs of co-sleeping and especially dealing with special situations. We've been extremely happy with our sleep arrangement and with the way our daughter is turning out, but I would love to see something offering us more "hands on" support and advice for our Co-sleeping arrangement. [For example, what can we do to ease things when a sibling comes along?]

This book was extremely helpful for making me feel better about following my instincts. I would suggest this book especially to those who cosleep, or are nursing.

This book has almost the same information as The Baby Sleep Book, but slightly less. Nighttime Parenting advocates breastfeeding on demand and sharing sleep in a family bed (more commonly referred to as co-sleeping). It is also generally know as the “attachment parenting” style and goes hand in hand with baby wearing. I personally understand the appeal of all these methods, and believed that I would use them successfully with all my children. I have also known several families who do use this style of approach and whose children sleep through the night within the first year and have no sleep problems. Unfortunately if these methods don’t work for your family, they don’t offer a lot of alternatives. I found this out as my first son continued to have extensive night waking and every time I read this book I felt it was “normal” and I postponed making significant changes until much later than was probably best for our family. I agree that INFREQUENT night waking IS most easily dealt with when your child is right next to you in the same bed or same room. But if the night waking is problematic this book may leave you feeling you can and should carry on with it instead of making more substantial changes. Overall, I’d suggest these methods for the first 3-4 months for everyone, but would suggest reading other books if you feel you still need more sleep at the six month mark.
