Metaphor, parapraxis, lacunae and myth are tools for a psychoanalysis of science (Oppenheim, 2007; Stein, 2005).

Metaphor, parapraxis, lacunae and myth are tools for a psychoanalysis of science (Oppenheim, 2007; Stein, 2005). This psychoanalysis is concerned with a certain scientific fundamentalism implicit in many theories and models used to help us understand the mythopoeic (pre-scientific) character of human thought. Structuralist, Freudian, Jungian and philosophical interpretations explore myths, trying to make them understandable. Metaphor, parapraxis, lacunae and myth are tools for a psychoanalysis of science (Stein, 2005; Oppenheim, 2007).

Simply put, Yehoyakim Stein's project is to psychoanalyze psychoanalysis. Stein wants to reveal our blind spots-our conceptual lacunae, as he calls them-not merely as a historical exercise, but also to induce change in our field. Stein's underlying question is a fascinating one: why do we think about some human concerns in psychoanalysis and not others? He argues-and, I think, persua-sively-that unless we analyze our blind spots, we will be stymied in our theoretical development. He also has some interesting ideas about how we can do this.

A scientific myth is a myth about science. Yehoyakim Stein (2005), The Psychoanalysis Of Science: The Role Of Metaphor, Paraprax, Lacunae And Myth, Sussex Academic Press, ISBN 9781845190705. For example, scientific discoveries are often presented in a mythological way with a theory being presented as a dramatic flash of insight by a heroic individual rather than as the result of sustained experiment and reasoning. For example, Newton's law of universal gravitation is commonly presented as the result of an apple falling upon his head.

By systematically deconstructing and analyzing scientific texts for irrational unconscious motivations, new scientific associations can be produced. Four categories are suggested in this book as guidelines for the analysis of science: metaphors, scientific parapraxes, lacunae, and scientific myths. The most important are the conceptual lacunae, for they constitute an integral part of the scientific construction. Three types of lacunae are discussed, each deriving from a different hidden motive: the blurring of a scientific problem in order to preserve the intactness of a theory (the post-traumatic dream); the epistemological double split which reflects the discrepancy between what we wish to see and what we actually see; and the difficulty of dealing with phenomena that evoke deep, primary fears (fantasies about the inside of the body). Examples from various disciplines are discussed in order to show that unconscious elements in science are a universal phenomenon. The function of scientific myths is explained. The hypothesis is tested on psychoanalysis itself, in this way providing a full explanation of how and why blind spots block scientific creativity.
