This book is a great read no matter what stage of your powerlifting or weightlifting career your in. Its anecdotal approach to assesing common situations that any gym rat comes accross are not only informative but will put a smile on your face. Alot of good information can be pulled from this book and applied not only to your gym routines but to your everyday life encounters. Great promgramming is peppered into the narrative. This really isn't for beginners but perfect for intermediate powerlifters.

O.K., so we weren't able to convince Paul to include a good recipe for chicken-fried steak, but what he did serve up is a humorous but insightful account of effective basic powerlifting training. Don't look here if you think your next gains come from going triple-ply or your next win depends on shopping for the right federation. Do stop by though if you think a little horse sense is just what's called for when it comes to basic training for powerlifting. 96 pp.

This book is full of great solid training routines solidly rooted in the basic barbell movements (squat, bench press, deadlift, overhead press) that have stood the test of time as premier developers of strength, power, and mass. The routines are not complicated and Paul Kelso does a brilliant job of delivering common-sense training and nutrition wisdom, wrapped in an entertaining tale. Like Jim Wendler, Kelso has the gift to cut through the nonsense and dogma that proliferates powerlifting. This book is well worth the money and the reader can probably read the whole thing in about 2 hours. However, you'll find yourself coming back to it again and again.

I bought this book under the impression that Kelso would provide some good advice with regards to training a beginner, devising programming, and working in the use of equipment. Unfortunately, what I got was a rather short collection of John McCallum-eque anecdotes that eventually led to some point about powerlifting. Kelso certainly isn't a bad writer, but, unlike McCallum, the anecdotes don't really provide the lesson. Instead, they're more of a distraction.

In general, I thought that the signal-noise ratio in this book was far too slanted in favor of noise. Despite my issues with Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength, it's a far better book for "powerlifting basics." I cannot recommend this book as anything beyond a somewhat entertaining, fairly short book that tangentially discusses PL.

Mr. Kelso's book amuses as it educates, and the characters, loosely based on real persons--of the Texan persuasion--are entertaining.Also, the training routines contained within the story have practical value, particularly for those new to weight training. Had such advice been available in the mid 1960s--when I started-- I'd have saved valuable time and effort, and avoided unnecessary injury. Read this book if you want to laugh as you learn.

This is a great book for those in the iron game. Not only is it funny and filled with characters we will all recognize from the gym, but the training tips are pretty good too.

A gem of a book. It's an informative, entertaining story that backs up the basic premise of strength training. Lift HEAVY, rest, and do unto others. Very simple review, but it's a very simple book: in a GREAT way!!
