The Stranger Comes at Sundown: Living and Dying with Parkinson's Disease.

It is a progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms get worse over time. It develops gradually over a period of years (usually about twenty years) and tends to affect only one side of the body at first. Patients may notice trembling or shaking in only one hand, which comes and goes and usually disappears during sleep. The tremor might involve the lips or chin rather than the hand. I purchased this book after many years of looking for a book on Parkinson's Disease that had information on a personal level.
All the books out there seem to be on a clinical level. It has been a very frustrating journey to find a book that will speak to you
about Parkinson's Disease on a daily basis. My father is a 5th Stage Parkinson's patient.. Jane Awalt's book is a blessing in disguise.
Jane journaled almost daily about the last two years of her husbands life on the battle of living and dying with Parkinson's.
Parkinson's disease is a cruel neurological disease. No two people go through it the same but, there are many commonalities
you will see as a Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Dementia patient. When I opened her book to read I saw our life jumping off the pages at me. Parkinson's is like a for the lack of better terminology a guessing and chasing game with medications, dosing times, changes in behavior,
It is a very painful journey to walk through with a loved one.I highly recommend this book as a must read for doctor's, RN's, care personnel, and most of all director's of facility's, lay people and family members. This book will serve you well. Jane Awalt you are a blessing
and amazing caring for your husband. Your strength and courage amaze me. I am much more comfortable and know were my father is
in his disease. I am grieving now. May God Bless all of you out there dealing with Parkinson's.

Very touching and moving journal. Having a sister with parkinson who is in the late stages I know first hand what challenges there are with this disease. I admire Mrs. Await so much for her strength and devotion. Being a caretaker for someone who is in late stages of this disease and with dementia is truly challenging. I thank her so much for sharing this journal as it gives my family insight into what may be ahead. Hopefully she has found peace in her heart after all she endured.

The raw, true tale of a loving caregiver for her husband with Parkinson's Disease. As a caregiver of one with PD myself, it made me reflect on how I'm caring for my beloved, made me ache for this lady who didn't know about Sundowners, and wonder at her great inner strength. I also laughed about her occasional soaking baths and glasses of wine. I sooo can relate!

The honesty of Mrs. Awalt regarding the debilitating psychological side of Parkinson's Disease that is so rarely and openly spoken of is very refreshing. It is, in my estimation, much more of a hardship on the relationship and caregiving, in general, than the physical aspects of the disease, which is the focus of most doctors, including neurologists. I guess it is something they can see for themselves, where often our beloveds tend to perform well in doctor's office when called to the task until the disease is very advanced.

A CHILDHOOD FRIEND, JANE LIVED THIS LIFE WITH A DEARLY LOVED HUSBAND SUFFERING FROM PARKINSONS. SHE LIVED IT QUIETLY AND NOBLY AND ANYONE WHO HAS A LOVED ONE WITH THIIS DREADFUL DISEASE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK

Tough book to read, a tough life to live...as a caregiver to a spouse who has dementia. But for those associated with such victims of Parkinsons--and other dementia situations--it needs to be read.

This book was very helpful. My husband has Parkinson's and this book enlightened me on several issues and concerns about the disease.
I want to thank the author. I'm going through exactly what she experienced and it is so good to know that I'm not alone. My husband and I have been great friends but this awful time is often overwhelming.
