Another Morning" addresses a subject rarely discussed in society: Mothers trying to raise a child while living with cancer. The author, Linda Blachman, through mutual friends, gave my daughter a signed copy of the book to give to me. While reading the introduction, I read the sentences, "To raise a child while living with cancer is to have your heart break. We have to live with broken hearts. I cried for myself as a cancer patient for the first time in 13 years.

“To raise a child while living with cancer is to have your heart break. We have to learn how to live with broken hearts.” So says one of the mothers interviewed in this powerful, inspirational, and deeply moving book, a tapestry of voices from ordinary women coping with every mother’s nightmare: a cancer diagnosis while raising children. It’s difficult to imagine a group more in need of attention and support than seriously ill mothers. Yet, women confronting the profound collision of mothering and cancer struggle amidst a remarkable absence of services or resources. Another Morning bridges that gap. The stories are interwoven with the author’s personal and professional reflections, drawing on her 25 years as a public health educator specializing in maternal-child health, and her experience as a mother. She explores themes of universal interest and concern for mothers: What can we do to responsibly prepare ourselves and our young for life’s inevitable losses? Can a mother ever be seen as both strong and fallible, as a whole human being? For mothers and all those who care about them, this book is an invaluable companion and source of comfort, full of insights, guidance, and real-world wisdom.

I was diagnosed with cancer a week before my younger child's 5th birthday. I was 39 yrs old and focused on my family and career. I wasn't supposed to have cancer, I was far too young and have children to raise. The thought that maybe I wouldn't be alive to raise my children was/is devastating. Trying to wrap my head around this new reality, I turned to books. I love reading and had quite a bit of time on my hands, between treatments, too tired to do much more than lay on the couch.

I bought quite a stack of books about cancer, but this is the only one that I finished. This is the one I will keep a copy of and gift to other mothers struggling with life threatening illness. This book is a blessing, a gift for which I am eternally grateful. It tackles the hardest subjects with grace, love and hope. The women on these pages reminded me that I can't control when or how I die (none of us can), but I can control how I live until then (all of us can).

Each morning is the beginning of another day. One more day to love my children, husband, family and friends. One more day to love and laugh, discipline and set limits. Teach my children who I am, who they are to me (my heart) and how we fit into this crazy world. I am so thankful for that. Today I am here and will be present in this moment. I will cry, too, because I mourn the future I thought I would have. I mourn the precious hearts I will break against my will. But through it all, I will be present for each day and know that I am not alone with these feelings. These strangers, these other mothers, we don't know each other, but we're in it together. As women living each day with a broken heart, being thankful for every moment.

I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this book. I was diagnosed with a life-threatening cancer a year and a half ago, when my kids were 6 and 10, and I am now dealing with recurrence. All this time I was surprised by how few books and other resources were available to help me deal with the challenges of advanced cancer and being a mother of young children at the same time. I found this book a month ago. It is giving me the inspiration I need to start recording my story and do other things to help my children remember me and how much I love them. I am very grateful to the author and the mothers who shared their stories.

I have had the privilege of being a volunteer listener with the Mothers Living Stories Project since its inception. When people ask me if it is depressing to do this work, I look at them with disbelief. In a society that can reduce itself to crass materialism and a need for instant gratification, the relationships that I developed with the mothers that I interviewed have truly been antidotal. I am reminded of what is real and what is possible. I see the indominatable spirit of love. I've learned to understand that death is always a full player in our lives and how we relate to that fact has a great deal to do with the quality of life that we enjoy (or don't). Most importantly, it has allowed me to be helpful to someone who is in need in a very personal manner.

Linda Blachman's book has captured the heart and hope that these mothers demonstrate over and over again. It is written for all of us who want to be reminded of the depths of the human heart and the fullness of love that we are designed to experience.

It is inspiring and brilliantly conceived and written.

Linda's work is moving and vital. It's hard when diagnosed with cancer. Friends are too scared to talk about it - what do they say. The support system can narrow down because of the fear. This book provides a bridge to the rest of a mother's life, whether she defeats the disease or not. What a precious gift Linda's guidance offers these stricken families. Sharing the stories in this book is a gift to the reader.

I was able to listen to Linda Blachman at an author reading in Menlo Park. I was struck with her personal history of dealing with pain and of being a mother while undergoing excruciating treatment for her ailments. Here is an author who can listen and convey empathy without being overbearing and who can transmit the stories of mothers, leaving their voices intact.

I am a Stage IV cancer patient with two boys, ages 8 and 11. I have long struggled with the knowledge of my imminent death and how to deal with my feelings of guilt over the abandonment of my kids. Even though I will leave a very caring and compentent father in the care, I still cannot shake my guilt over leaving them motherless. Linda's book has given me the stories of mothers in the same situation and feelings. It has been a great relief for me to find a place where I can find understanding for my own feelings. Linda's book has prompted me to work on my Ethical Will (I have, long ago, together with my husband, signed a Living Will) and to reflect on my own life story and my expectations for my children. Thank you Linda for one of the most worthewhile books I have ever had the pleasure to read!

First, I must tell you to consider the source: I tend to be more than a little cynical of collected personal histories. Too many times the personal stories are twisted by the writer into a plea for some specific cause or belief. Linda Blachman's "Another Morning: Stories of Truth and Hope from Mothers with Cancer" is a remarkable exception. Maintaining a compassionate distance, Blachman allows each mother to tell her story not only with her own words but with her open heart. The result is a series of characters who take the book far beyond the limits of its subtitle. This is also about hurt, anger, acceptance, love, and the overwhelming human necessity of storytelling. Blachman's voice and ideas are always clear but never overshadow these extraordinary women. This book is not only for the mothers and their children, it is also for the ages.
