I found a copy of the New Dieter's Cookbook on sale at a local bookstore and decided to order a copy for my Dad for about half price of what I had paid. This is an excellent cookbook. The problems that I've encountered with many diet cookbooks is that they include recipes that force you to cook with all sorts of ingredients that are so alienated from the traditional sense. I don't want to grind up almonds to get a powder to make a paste to make whatever type of bread that contains no flour. I don't want something that I have to special order from online and to be perfectly honest I don't want tofu even though I am a former vegetarian of 7 years. In short, I don't want to have to re-learn how to cook entirely. I just want healthy cooking alternatives for classic recipes as well as new interesting recipes to try out that don't require me to use 100 different ingredients and which don't require me to live next door to a whole foods store in order to make them. This cookbook delivers exactly the opposite of what most other diet cookbooks do. These are simple yet very flavorful dishes that range from very easy to make to fun to try out one day when you have a little more time. They have everything from Mexican and Chineese food to slimmed down comfort food favorites such as chicken and dumplings. There are bread recipes, a special entertaining section, a holiday section, a kid's section, a quick weeknight meals section, and even a desert section. There are so many choices that there is something for everyone here. Everything is practical and the waist trimming advantage that you gain from this cookbook is real. After cooking for 3 months exclusively from this book I lost 30 pounds and my husband lost about 50 pounds. The best part is, you can't even tell the food is from a diet cookbook. I made some of the brownie cookies which come in at only 72 calories each and my mother is screaming for the recipe (I told her that dad's copy is on the way). My sister steals as many cookies as she can whenever she's over (and she makes a point to stop over if she knows I've made them). Even her extremely picky husband was screaming for these cookies. My husband got upset with me when I made some other cookies from a "normal" cookbook. He asked when I didn't make them from the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook instead. He said he knows that those cookies are good. And they are. And, there are so many other recipes in here that I can't wait to try out. For me anyway, it's really helped to make cooking fun again just without all of the guilt. Thank you Better Homes and Gardens.
I own the earlier edition of this book (1997) but it got water damaged so I purchased the latest edition. As I compared the two I found that 90% of my favorite recipes were included in the new edition, and I found about 30 new recipes in the latest edition! Beautiful layout- I love the list of recipes at the front of each chapter section; the pictures seem brighter and more appealing; the order of nutrition facts makes more sense (the old version order was calories, carbs, protein, fat, the new version calories, fat, saturated fat, carbs, protein, etc.) I also love the new order of the sections- it makes more sense to have beverages and breakfasts at the front instead of the back. The main dish salads section has increased exponentially and with some very exciting recipes. Overall, very user friendly, great new recipes along with the old ones and very healthful!! Thanks BHG!!!
What a great cookbook! Every recipe has a picture AND a description of what it tastes like. You can just look at the dish and decide if that's what you're in the mood for! Another thing; usually, to make diet-conscious, lip-smacking meals you have to buy a whole bunch of funky ingredients that who-knows if you'll ever use again. Not with these! Every recipe I've made so far called for ingredients I already had and the meals were restaurant quality delicious. If I had found this cookbook first I would have never bought any of the others I have. I give this a standing ovation.
Are you sick of dieting? Are you tired of nasty, chalky "protein shakes" that make you gag? Are you tired of gimmicks in magazines and on T.V.? Do you want to eat real, palatable actual food? Well, if so, this is YOUR cookbook.
I have been using this cookbook for 3 weeks and have lost 8 POUNDS! I am using the 1200 calorie-per-day meal plan and the pounds are just melting off. And I am eating real food. There are recipes for lasagne, fried chicken, even CHEESECAKE!
Most recipes are under 350 calories per serving, which make them easy to fit into the 1200-calorie-per-day scheme. Additionally, with this book, sticking with good, healthy eating habits is easy, since the recipes are so delicious. I especially like the salad nicoise, the roasted garlic chicken, the apple-oatbran muffins, the lemony asparagus shrimp and the cheese blintzes.
Is your mouth watering? Well, you too can have all this and more, just buy this book! It will be the best tactical move in your own weight-loss odyssey!
While this cookbook is great for dieters, it is also great for those who just want a new cookbook! There are many really good recipes in it and they don't make you feel like you are eating "diet food." This has been one of my favorite cookbooks for quite some time now!

I feel compelled to write about this book. I have lost 38 lbs in 8 weeks using this wonderful cookbook (OK so the first 12 lbs were water and yes I have been exercising). The receipes are tasty and that makes a big difference. You learn a new way to cook without using butters, oils, high fat and high colesterol ingredients. Many items are complete meals without needing side dishes. I particularly like the baked french bread, stuffed peppers, baked fish, and Southwestern stuffed squash. Dieting is not my favorite activity. Food is good. My doctor's advice was to loose weight. This book has made the process worth while. I recommend this book highly. It works.
