book by Ronald L. Rogers. Most books I read on drug and alcohol abuse are either too technical or oversimplified (like the reader doesn't have a working brain and has to have everything explained at the fifth grade level). This book is the exception.

Bought this for my wife. It was recommended to her as a good read. It is good for someone new in recovery but involved in recovery for over 2 years, there is nothing new here.

This book was recommended to me by a counselor, while it's out of print, it's still a really good reference I think.

Amazon service was excellent.

Rogers' and McMillin's book is still an excellent resource for anyone close to an over-drinker (drinking problems) or an addict. Although published in 1992, the information in this book is, for the most part, as applicable as it was 20 years ago.

This book has excellent material on doing an intervention, for example a section on preparing for the defense mechanisms analcoholic or addict can throw at you. Remember, they are very good at this! They've been manipulating their families through these means for years. The book also makes an important point, that the primary enabler may be the primary victim of the disorder--but only because "she" doesn't know any better. This book doesn't correct the "enabler's" problem, but addresses it, which is excellent as an introduction. Other books are addressed specifically to that topic. The authors give tough love to the families they write to, as well as to people in treatment. In addressing the fear families can have of the drinker's reactions, or perhaps economic problems that may ensue, they remind us, "After all--what have you (really) got to lose?" Which breaks through the family's own defenses about their problem alcoholic-addict, and the impossibility of him/her getting better without help. In other words, without action, they are going to lose everything anyway.

Another important area covered is "Keys to Finding Good Treatment," which is more important today than when the book was originally written. Today's era of massive corporations that operate treatment centers for corporate profit, or inferior approaches for exorbitant prices, how can an individual or family determine which of the many, many, many offers of help (for $$) will be best for their loved ones, as well as for themselves. The reader is given ten important factors to look for in making this selection--factors which are still of prime importance.

This book does a terrific job of introducing people to the true situation for the over-drinker and his/her family, a terrific job of introducing them to treatment for other drugs, a great job of giving simple summaries of the 12 steps, as well as very good information on conducting an intervention--the applying of pressure simultaneously by a group of people. Interventions, well done, are one of the few ways to crash through the defenses of the alcoholic-addict.

Again, this book is an oldie, but upon rereading it after nearly 20 years, I realize how much valuable information is still valid and important. Don't overlook it just because it's old!

I read this book many years ago when my husband was using. After years of Alanon and support groups, this book was finally able to help me understand my role and specifically, what I should and should NOT do under very difficult circumstances.

I did not like all of the advice; but I followed it and it helped me to find some boundaries and to say, "NO MORE"!! Fortunately, my husband chose recovery over 10 years ago and life is wonderful.

I have given this book to at least 10 friends and colleagues who also found it very helpful....good luck...read the book and don't give up!!

THis book is all that I was looking for. The info is sooooo understanding and has enlightened me as to where my Brother is at with his alcoholism and drug use, as well as, his recovery.

It has also helped me as to identify my feelings and emotions while living with his addiction.

I am ordering two more books for my Mom and other Brother today!

This is too good to be true. Even Al Anon doesn't clarify as well as this book. Good luck
