Sharon K. Penman does her research. She doesn't describe the gowns the women are wearing, or go heavy into romance, she describes the realities of returning from an unsuccessful Crusade, the cultural impact on those who served in the sieges and the respect for their Saracen opponents, the trauma of travel in the Mediterranean during stormy winter months, and the political realities King Richard the Lionheart had to deal with day by day, minute by minute.

He was an extraordinary man, but a man who could never stop thinking about his next move, his next war, his many opponents, and those who coveted his crown. Penman doesn't romanticize, but she makes all her characters living, breathing people, people in their true context. It may not be as much fun as Philippa Gregory, but it has a greater feel of the times.

Penman does her research in depth, using many historical resources and documents, so I learned a great deal in reading this account of Richard the Lionheart's ordeal of capture, imprisonment and eventual ransom and return; an event I'd never heard of before Lionheart (Book 4). Even the fictional aspects of the story seem well-grounded and interesting as they come to life, showing life in this brutal and politically complex period of history. Richard's shades of personality and decisions are fascinating, as are the aspects of his family's relationships--strong Queen Eleanor, timid Berengaria, fiery Joanna and shadowed John.

I didn't find the long, detailed battle and campaign accounts as interesting, and they were at times hard for me to visualize and follow; but I'm sure many readers would soak it up and have no problem.

With hundreds of pages invested in Richard, Joanna, Morgan, Eleanor and others--I had a dread of seeing the end of the story and these amazing figures of history. Penman brought them to life for me, and I mourned their ends when they arrived.

Well done.

Sharon Kay Penman writes with accuracy and passion. Her characters draw you into the plot and keep you wanting to turn the page. I hated to have the book end. I've been reading historical fiction all my life, but her books are the best of the genre, in my estimation. In this book, you'd think it would be boring since her main character is imprisoned for the first half of the book, but the plot never drags. The villains are multi-faceted and believable. The minor characters provide fascinating insights into the life of the people in the Middle Ages, as well as being interesting in their own ways. Although this is the last book in a series, it can stand alone. I recommend this book unreservedly.

Medieval history lovers you have picked the right author. Sharon writes so well and does thorough research so that you are not subjected to historical inaccuracy in the name of entertainment. If you're new to her, don't start with this book. Start with When Christ and His Saints Slept, then Time and Chance, then A Devil's Brood, followed by Lionheart and cap it off with A King's Ransom for a chronological journey through the Plantagenet line. Did you watch the Lion in Winter? If you did, and you liked it as much as I did, you will love the experience of reading these books. On top of that, Sharon is a very generous writer. She maintains a Facebook page and frequently posts items of interest to medieval history buffs and points her followers to other authors who write fictional history with the same dedication to accuracy.

Have just finished reading the series:When Christ And His Saints Slept, Time And Chance, Devil's Brood, Lionheart, A King's Ransom. Loved them all. Once I started reading it was hard to put them down. I am now obsessed with English/British history. There is a great HISTORY OF BRITAIN series on youtube.com - 15 parts! The series doesn't cover events in as much detail Penman's books but provided background - not to mention the artifacts and scenes of many of the places in the books that remain today. I also enjoyed the following books by Elizabeth Chadwick that cover some of the same history/characters: A PLACE BEYOND COURAGE (John FitzGilbert aka John the Marshall, Williams father), THE GREATEST KNIGHT (William Marshall, part 1), THE SCARLET LION (William Marshall, part 2), FOR THE KING’S FAVOR (Roger Bigod), TO DEFY A KING (Mahelt Marshall Bigod, Williams oldest daughter).

Doug King, a wealthy industrialist, is putting together a secret deal that will effectively give him control of the company where he has been working for most of his life. To make the deal, he's had to scrape together every last dime he has and that he can borrow. Now he's got $750,000 and is ready to make his move.

Just as he's about to put his plan into motion, however, a kidnapper calls King and tells him that the kidnapper and his partner have King's young son, Bobby. If King wants his son back alive, he needs to pay $500,000. The kidnappers will phone with instructions later.

King and his wife are naturally panicked and call the cops. Steve Carella and other detectives from the 87th Precinct spring into action and are busy setting traps on King's phone lines and doing the other things that the police would normally do in such a case when Bobby walks through the door after playing outside.

It turns out that the kidnappers have made a critical mistake. Instead of grabbing Bobby, they have grabbed his playmate, the son of King's humble chauffer. The kidnappers don't care; they still want the five hundred grand. Doug King would have been willing to pony up the money for his own son, but he's not so sure about ransoming back the chauffer's kid, because if he does, he will not have the money he needs to complete his big business deal.

While Carella and the other detective try to track the kidnappers and rescue the boy, Doug King must wrestle with his conscience and decide what to do. It makes for an entertaining tale with a complex moral dilemma at its center. The result is one of the better early entries in this long-running series.
