The major sources of data were prospective teachers and teacher educators of the three randomly selected Teacher Education Institutes in the three Ethiopian Universities.

James Banks has revised this book 4 times, yet it still contains data from its first printing, holding that this is still relevant to today's multicultural education. The majority of the cited work is his own work from the 2001 and 2004 editions. He even contends that a movie from 1962, How the West Was Won, (53 years ago), has affected society's views of African Americans and Mexicans. Surely there's more up-to-date data and more currently-used strategies than are more valuable and effective. This was required reading for a college graduate course to earn a multicultural teaching certificate. Waste of my money and time.

Use the rental program for this book. Great way to get something and use for a bit and not have to be stuck with it forever. Just returned it to UPS to return back. It was painless and easy. Will recommend Amazon Rental program again.

This book is okay as far as providing references to documented information. I also like the fact that it's an easy read. However, I couldn't give this book more stars, because it is not well-organized.

Horrible book that right up-front states that much of ***factual*** American history is so much... uh, "baloney". Unbelievable -- yet... there are some in "higher"(?) education who are encouraging this nonsense (on the grounds that is is "encouraging diversity", etc., etc. Let the buyer (or the future instructor who might be contemplating selecting this book) beware.

P. S. For those reading this review who may be thinking, "A-ha! Here's a reviewer with 'sour grapes', who perhaps earned a terrible grade in a course that used this book!": Surprise! I earned an A (despite my having strongly disagreed with Banks' countless assertions that trash American history).

P. P. S. My ancestral heritage includes having family members who played a huge role in the "Underground Railroad"; those who know me understand how much I love those from other countries as well as from other cultures.

I read this book for a class on multicultural education. It is not only the most poorly written and useless textbook I have ever read, but it is probably the worst written and most useless book I've read period. The author repeats himself so frequently that it is difficult for even an advanced reader like me (college grad, lifelong reader, professional editor for nearly 20 years) to keep focused on the reading. Though Banks quotes a great deal of worthwhile research, his descriptions of the findings are so vague that you could never tell what the study actually studies or what the key findings were. I would say that he glosses over key concepts but that would imply that he even hints at the key concepts. This book is full of throat-clearing and jargon and very sorely lacking in real, research-based, and actionable information. Though the author rails against traditional ways of teaching and structuring schools for not doing enough for disenfranchised populations, he does just as much to prevent multicultural education from gaining ground by writing this exceedingly redundant bit of "academic" fluff.

This is an atrocious book--a perfect example of how the textbook publishing industry promotes terrible work and charges students top dollar for it. If you are considering assigning it for a class, I would strongly encourage you to search elsewhere. If you are required to read it for a class, you have my pity.
