I loved this book when I was teaching. I used the strategies both in my class and at home for the parents. I laminated the bookmarks that showed simple drawings of each of the 8 strategies. On one side of the bookmark was the strategies while the other had simple phonics rules. Parents really loved this because, like many of them said, they "don't know how to teach reading!" It gives alternatives to "sound it out". All the strategies are very simple with a clear illustration. For example, one of the 8 strategies is "TRY A POPPER". It is a picture of a balloon popping. This strategy (graphophonic and semantic) encourages the reader to just sound out the first letter of the unfamiliar word and continue reading the sentence. Many times the word will then "pop" into your head (because you know what it starts with and what would make sense). This is my second time buying the book. I use it with my own children (taping the bookmark to the wall near their beds). It is filled with fun games to reinforce each strategy. I never used the games, although I did send them home with some struggling readers. I really love it!!
