Open Universities: a British tradition? g and Other Further EducatiodHigher Education Partnerships: the student experience and policy The Student Experience. Bell, R. and Tight, M. (1993), Open Universities: a British tradition? Buckingham, Open University Press. This book considers the meaning of part-time higher education, illustrates its scope, and looks at its relation to higher education as a whole. It provides a guide to the past, present, and future of part-time higher education in the United Kingdom. The book describes the institutions and students involved, and the context in which they operate.
It argues that in Britain there is a long and varied tradition of such developments, and that there has been a significant 20th-century reduction in the open-ness of our universities, particularly in the period from the 1950s to the 1970s. Other examples discussed range from Oxford and Cambridge, in their pre-World War II guise, and the 19th-century Scottish universities, to the correspondence colleges and the university extension movement.
Its stated aims are to achieve its objectives by encouraging debate and publication of the policies, organisation, and management of higher education establishments.
His books include The Idea of Higher Education, The Limits of Competence, Higher Education: A Critical Business, Realizing the University and Beyond All Reason (all published by Open University Press). cover design: Kate Prentice.
