Creating and Sustaining the Constructivist Classroom. by Bruce A. Marlowe and Marilyn L. Page. This is the only book on constructivism that I have ever seen that is designed for teachers as opposed to academics

Creating and Sustaining the Constructivist Classroom. This is the only book on constructivism that I have ever seen that is designed for teachers as opposed to academics. While it is clearly scholarly, it is highly practical and contains a wealth of useful, creative, and exciting ideas for teachers to put into practice tomorrow in their own classrooms. Their is a glowing endorsement on the back cover from Alfie Kohn, one with which I wholly agree, who notes that the book presents highly effective and engaging strategies to help students find meaning in their educational experience.

Overall I would say that the book is worth reading but would be most useful for people who already believe in Constructivism to look at the table of contents and pick out the areas that you are interested in rather than reading all the way through. It doesn't give as many strategies as I would like it seems more interested in putting out fires and proving that Constructivism is worth doing, which for me was unnecessary because I already believed that, and I was more interested in creating the classroom and sustaining it. It was good to see where someone had tried to do it and it failed but then ultimately managed to make it work elsewhere.

Excellent! should be mandatory reading for all trainee teachers, teachers and managers in education. The approach involves a more empathic approach to working with children, allowing them to grow towards independent, joyful learning.

The book was in great shape and came on the Saturday before my class started on Monday.

The authors got it right in the first edition, but this new edition is extraordinary. Marlowe and Page address every important issue in relation to developing constructivist classrooms and give teachers the support they need to believe in themselves.

If you don't read anything else this year, get this book and read chapter 5 on standards and assessment. It cuts through the nonsense of mandates and will leave you saying, "At last, someone put it in writing." See for yourself! It's a must have book that will continue to be the bible for constructivist practice.
