by. Montessori, Maria. The book also becomes a mine for her observations and insights. I've heard that individuals call this book "a difficult read". I would say, however, that it is one of the essential works in the field of education. Dr. Robert Gardner, Professor Emeritus, Ryerson University.

Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator best known for the philosophy of education that bears her name, and her writing on scientific pedagogy. Her educational method is in use today in public and private schools throughout the world. In 1947 she returned to India and gave courses in Adyar and Ahmedabad. These courses led to the book The Absorbent Mind, in which Montessori described the development of the child from birth onwards and presented the concept of the Four Planes of Development.

The Absorbent Mind book. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, philosopher, humanitarian and devout Catholic; she is best known for her philosophy and the Montessori method of education of children from birth to adolescence. Montessori defined an Absorbent Mind when a child is effortless assimilating the sensorial stimuli of the environment. One analogy for this concept: a sponge soaking in everything within the environment. Another analogy: a camera snapping images of everything it sees through the lens. The ‘absorbent mind‘ welcomes everything, puts its hope in everything, accepts poverty equally with wealth, adopts any religion and the prejudices and habits of its countrymen, incarnating all in itself. This is the child! – The Absorbent Mind {pg. 292}. What is the Absorbent Mind.

This book is a masterpiece - and there are several problems with _this_ edition. There are 2 main versions (in English) of this book. The first was published in India, in 1949, and that text is now in the public domain. You can find it online to download at no cost. That is the text used in most inexpensive editions, including this one. The publishers have reformatted the book, using the text that is in the public domain, and copyrighted their particular arrangement of the words and pages. In some of the printed copies of this version, the type can be hard to read and sometimes pages are even missing.

The version favored by Montessori training organizations, translated by Claude Claremont in 1958, is different. You can tell you are getting the Claremont translation if it has a foreword by John Chattin-McNichols Ph.D. or a translator's note by Claremont. There is no Kindle format available for this edition.

Unfortunately, as of February 2018, these two versions are mixed together in Amazon's system and need to be separated out. Even more disturbing is that this Kindle version is linked to the other translation as if they are the same book in different formats. They aren't. I actually like reading both and comparing, but the translations from Italian are different and need to be sorted as such. Some of the reviews linked to this book were written about the Claremont translation (and some negative reviews about the public domain versions are posted on the Claremont editions.)

Choose carefully. They are _not_ all the same.

Having taken other editions of this book from my local library several times, I decided to finally buy myself a copy. However, this edition by BN Publishing is very sloppily made. I don’t know who translated this edition (since the book doesn’t tell you as much), but it manages to completely crush the eloquence and passion that’s present in so many other Montessori writing I’ve read. Instead I’m treated to ~240 pages of unpunctuated run-ons that are a chore to read. The lack of an index is also thoroughly unhelpful. All in all, quite disappointed with this purchase. Wonderful book, horrible edition.

I have been working in and studying Montessori for nearly twenty years. I recently purchased a new copy of The Absorbent Mind, this one with the chalkboard on front. This book is incomplete (from missing pages to an entire chapter), does not use Dr. Montessori's words and on many occasions distorts the actual meaning of the concepts discussed. I would strongly recommend investing in a different version.
The book Dr. Montessori wrote is a very different experience than this one represents. If you are interested in the book seek out a different edition consider one with a forward by John Chattin - McNicholes. The Absorbent Mind [ABSORBENT MIND] [Paperback]

This is NOT THE ABSORBENT MIND but a boot leg copy full of typos, missing illustrations, and even 40+ pages missing from the actual copy. I am attaining a Montessori certification and was often confused reading this book wondering what other class mates were talking about in a discussion until I realized that this was not the actual book. It is Dr Montessori's words but incomplete. There is not even a copywright date anywhere in the book. The chapters have different page numbers, chapter names, missing illustrations, and figures from the actual translations of Dr Montessori. The typos in the book are weird such as an occasional $ placed in a word. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!

In the description of this book they even state the the book you are able to search in is not the actual book you receive, and they state that the book showed is by another publishing company but what you buy is their book.......TOTALLY FALSE ADVERTISEMENT....... this kind of thing really makes me mad...... I have never given anyone a bad review but this is a SHAME to the Dr Maria Montessori name.
This is a correct version

There are only two versions that are complete and accurate for Dr. Montessori's work. The edition from Owl Books (Henry Holt and Company) and the Clio Series. They are full versions and translated keeping in tact the meaning of Dr. Montessori's words.

The cover picture show next to the stars for this review (a young child jumping) is NOT a full, complete and accurate version. BN Publishing, Wilder Publications and other print on demand versions that are around $10.00 (US) are misleading and incomplete, missing portions of chapters and even full chapters.

DO NOT waste your money on those editions. Buy the real thing and enjoy the journey into authentic Montessori. Well worth the extra time and investment.

Dr. Montessori was so far ahead of her times! This book is ageless in it’s approach and information. It is informative, evocative and demanding in it’s pursuit to challenge long held beliefs about what children are capable of and how we as adults can further their development thru careful observation and response to the child’s needs and interests.
A Must Read for all parents interested in giving their child the best start in life and
Every Montessori teacher.

Though the methodology is sound, beware that this version of the Absorbent Mind is not the original translation. This translation has been changed. For a few of my colleagues this makes it easier to understand without Dr. Montessori's wordy way of saying things. Because it has been watered down, however, I found it quite difficult to reference when taking the AMS training. When they wanted me to find a specific passage on a specific page it was near impossible. To me the translation matters.
