Van de Walle, Late of Virginia Commonwealth University This is the philosophy behind Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally. Van de Walle wrote this book to help students understand mathematics and become confident in their ability to teach the subject to children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Although he could not have foreseen the changes in mathematics teaching over the last three decades, he was at the forefront of the movement towards a constructivist view of teaching, or teaching developmentally.

John A. Van de Walle has written a book that helps readers make sense of mathematics and become confident in their ability to teach mathematics to children K to 8. Elementatry and Middle School Mathematics consists of 16 chapters reflecting the view that all mathematics can be taught through a problem-solving approach that motivates children and builds their confidence as they learn. This book thoroughly discusses the new standards and clearly develops four key aspects of teaching mathematics: the nature of mathematics as a science of pattern and order; an understanding of how children learn mathematics; a problem solving view of teaching mathematics; and specific methods for integrating assessment with instruction. Simple yet effective classroom activities are woven throughout the chapters as well as suggestions for technology and literature. For teachers, future teachers, and educators. nt Code

There was some confusion with Amazon on whether this was an e-version or the actual text book, so to clarify this is an electronic version of the actual textbook. You will get a brochure type of thing in the mail that includes an access code to the text. It was easy to download and is user friendly.

I'm a math tutor looking for ideas on how to help weaker students "get" math. The book is very comprehensive and I do not have time to read it from cover to cover. So far I've only read the fractions, measurements and early number sense chapters and got many great ideas from those alone, which make this book worth the hefty price.I agree with most of the principles and ideas the authors put forth so far, but personally feel mastering the facts is more important than the authors say it is.

I will update this review as I read more do the book.

I can't say that I loved it, because who really loves a college textbook? However, as far as textbooks go, this one is really well laid out. The best part is all of the examples, and the direct quotations of interactions between students and teachers. There is SO much content in here that it is hard to absorb it all. It helped me get a good understanding of how students think in the math classroom, and how important it is to give them a foundational understanding of mathematics rather than have them memorize facts and formulas. I would like a few more pictures, resources, and activities (maybe in a back index?), because the activities that are there are embedded in the text. It would be nice if they could all be seen together in one place.

It certainly met my expectations and then some. I have not read the entire book but what I have studied has opened my eyes to innovative ways to understand, perceive, and, of course teach mathematics. I recommend this book for educators, home schoolers and parents interested in developing their math skills and those of their kids. This book carries a big punch! Buckle up and be ready to do some work. And most importantly, enjoy it. Via this source of communication, I would be interested in what you think after reading and working a few chapters. Have a good day.

Great book. I recommend to anyone teaching math. Each chapter has tons of activities and at the end of each chapter it has literacy recommendations for the concept of that chapter.

This is an amazing resource! This is the required textbook for a class I'm taking. I reluctantly bought it because I have the previous edition. I'm so glad that I did because there are differences between the editions, such as the 'Learning Trajectory for Counting.' This book includes a lot of information about what to do to help students move from one level of the trajectory to the next. It also includes guidance on how to tell if a student really understands a concept.

Nearly $100 is a bit crazy considering that they print these on normal paper, and they aren't even in color. That's right folks, you get to pay a Benjamin for a plastic wrapped stack of pages printed on newspaper, and you don't even get color. Pearson rips us off again.
This textbook is really great because it combines all of the state standards while teaching you great methods to teach students math. I appreciated how it stressed some of the most important points of teaching math. I think the best advice I got out of this book is always stressing the process of solving math problems, not the actual outcome itself. It really helped me learn a lot about teaching math as a teacher.
