Traditional Scottish recipes were a familiar part of my childhood because my Nana loved to cook, and especially to bake. I often left for school with a tummy full of porridge, and came home to find the house full of the delicious scent of shortbread, tablet, fruitcake (fruit 'bread') Nana called it. No wonder I have a sweet tooth! Scottish food might not be the healthiest diet on the planet (okay, it's not even close!) but it IS yummy, and surprisingly diverse.

I do however like salmon, and Nigella recommended it, and queen Nigella can do no wrong. I bought this book just hoping to get a few of the recipes for meals I had eaten growing up in Scotland. I was so happpy to see loads of familiar and well loved recipes. Since buying I have made 'clootie' dumpling and treacle scones and am about to attempt Selkirk Bannock and butteries. I am in comfort food heaven! I can usually find single recipes online or dotted through different cookbooks but never alltogether in one book. Her instructions are easy to follow and she has an interesting anecdote or story for each one. For an expat like me who craves cullen skink and scotch broth and who is constantly on the phone for recipes its great. If you love good Scottish food (which is highly underrated) then this is the book for you.

I bought this book after visiting Scotland five times. I enjoyed the food while I was there and I wanted to be able to cook some of the dishes at home. Sue Lawrence is a well-known Scots cook and I chose her book after reading some of her cooking articles in Scottish newspapers. While altering recipes to make them healthier or to use more readily available ingredients, Sue retains the tradition and taste of the food. Scots food has long been under-appreciated as it isn't considered gormet like French and Italian cooking, but it is hearty and can be very satisfying. It is more like comfort food.

I was looking for easy, everyday recipes (that Scots eat on a regular basis today) easy to find here in the USA. A lit of places where these foods can be found would be helpful. It probably doesn't help that I don't live near the ocean and there's not a lot of fresh seafood available here.

After traveling to Scotland a couple of times we really enjoyed a lot of the traditional food and wanted to be able to prepare it at home.
This book has very good and easy recipes. Also love the stories that go along with the recipes. Highly recommend the recipes for the Cullen Skink and Cock-a-Leekie soups - they are very simple but tasty.
