Gourmet magazine was a monthly publication of Condé Nast and the first . magazine devoted to food and wine. Founded by Earle R. MacAusland (1890–1980), Gourmet, first published in January 1941, also covered "good living" on a wider scale. On October 5, 2009 Condé Nast announced that Gourmet would cease monthly publication by the end of 2009, due to a decline in advertising sales and shifting food interests among the readership.

I don't cook much these days, but I have been collecting the Best of Gourmet books because they make for such interesting reading.

First in this 1998 edition comes a section with twenty-three menus and their associated photographs. These menus contain, among others, holiday suggestions for New Year's Eve, Chinese New Year, Easter, Father's Day, Thanksgiving (two separate menus), and Christmas. This section also contains three Less is More menus, with lighter fare.

Then, the book contains recipes for all the dishes listed in the menus. My favorite is Walnut Maple Torte with Maple Meringue Frosting (also pictured with the Dessert Party menu), a cake that contains nearly everything I like.

Another section contains The Flavors of India, with beautiful pictures and three more menus with the associated recipes.

Finally, this book lists suggestions for Gifts From Your Kitchen, with recipes and mail order sources (but no online site addresses). These include snacks, hors d'oeuvres, condiments, sweet sauces, and sweets, with tips for gift presentation.

The photography in this book is spectacular. The table settings are beautiful, and the back matter contains details about the china, crystal, and flatware in the pictures. Gourmet was always known for excellent photographs of food, and this book of the best of the 1997 issues is no exception.

The index could contain the Indian and gift entries, but this is a small flaw. Buy this book for the photography, a year's worth of Gourmet recipes, and excellent articles on Indian food and food gifts.

This book has everything going for it. It's one of the best cookbooks I've ever seen. The whole "Best of Gourmet" series is great, but this is one of my favorites. Do not let the year (1992) deter you, because this book has stood the test of time beautifully, and if the date wasn't printed on it you'd never know. It is chock full of beautiful pictures, entire menus, and recipies for everyone from the novice cook to the gourmand chef. The recipies are easy to follow, delicious, and beautiful. When I don't feel like cooking, I even just enjoy flipping through and enjoying the photos - they're THAT good! Every serious chef should have this incredible book.

the recipes in this book were from the year 1998, from the issues i assume. i was kind of misreading i supposed that it was about Indian food, that is my mistake. The recipes in the book are moslty American, alot of picnic type foods, pies, waffles, roasts and stuff. in the back there are a couple-or-three pages with some notes on indian spices and i think 3? dinner menues with recipes for them. so while i was really disappointed in that, im sure the book has alot of other good recipes...

I subscribed to "The Best of Gourmet" in the 90's and still have those books. I purchase this one for my daughter as a gift and ended up getting the same for myself. I like the format and pictures; and the recipes are delicious!

This was the only book that I purchased from Daily Deals - out of an order of 17 books - that came in perfect condition, as described - which was 'unused and like new'. I still take off 2 stars because all the other books I purchased from Daily Deals at the same time were NOT as advertised. I cannot recommend Daily Deals at all.

Great ethnic recipes! Wonderful snippets on their origins. I was a great fan of Gourmet magazine and the entire series is a must in preserving their fantastic collection of delicious, easy to follow recipes with excellent, taste pleasing results.

I love the book, and its recipes! They are wonderful originals, some of them simple and with extraordinary flavor! A great gift to myself~
Excellent compendium of fabulous, time tested recipes! I have not delved into the current year's recipes, just really enjoying the best of 65 years recipes. Totally worth having.
