I've been a vegetarian for more than 20 years and bought my share of cookbooks in that time. Unfortunately, many have specialized in what I would call 'vegetarian punishment cuisine'. Really basic, HEALTHY, meatless food. What they might serve at GITMO if you've been really bad. :-) I exaggerate only slightly. I don't have a natural gift for cooking. I mostly follow recipies and make minor modifications.

My introduction to Vegeterranean came during a recent trip to the UK. A vegetarian friend invited me to share a meal with his family. I had no idea of the delightful meal that awaited me! He served a 7 course dinner, with many of the dishes inspried by this cookbook. I was completely blown away, both by the wonderfully layered flavors and by the amount of effort my friend had put into the preparation. After dinner, I paged through the book, drooling, despite the fantastic meal I had just consumed.

On my return to the US, I ordered the book from Amazon. I spent some time just reading it, enjoying the photos and absorbing the tips and comments of the authors. I've since made about a half-dozen dishes and there hasn't been a clunker in the bunch.

I would say that many of these dishes are fairly complex and assume that the reader has a reasonable knowledge of basic cooking skills. Many are on the rich side, with generous amounts of milk, eggs and cheese. Very tasty, but something that you may want to pair with lighter and simpler dishes. That said, the results are a visually and gastronomically wonderful.

I have been a vegetarian for about a decade now, and love to cook. Most recently, I have been obsessed with all cooking Italian per my ancestry. I have a few books at home (vegetarian and not), but most are not very in-depth and utilize too many processed products and shortcuts. When I was researching new books, this one immediately caught my eye. I ordered it and pined away at my mailbox till it arrived. Upon receiving the book I realized that I was falling in love with every aspect of it. The gorgeous photography, the beautiful, personal stories of Mala, Antonio, and their journey to building their Italian vegetarian hotel and restaurant, as well as the mouthwatering recipes. The book is impressively comprehensive. To date (and I haven't even had the book a month yet) I have made dozens upon dozens of recipes. Every morning I wake up and take notes in the book of the recipe made from the night before, and then pour over the pages to decide what I am going to make for this night. Then I shop, come home, and begin cooking. I appreciate the thoughfulness, composition, and flavor of all these dishes, as well as the tidbits of history about where each dish originates from. Every single recipe I have tried has been a smashing success. I have been hosting many dinner parties and my friends and family are always raving about the food. It is my passion and my way to show them how much I care. I feel entirely connected to my ancestry, the food, and ironically, even Antonio and Mala for their personable approach to composing this book. It is by far my favorite cookbook I have ever invested in. It is like a diary to me now ... or a food bible of sorts. It has become an essential part of my daily culinary life. My only wish, is that they would come out with another book in English because I can tell I will have covered most of the recipes in the weeks and months to come. It is my dream and ambition now to travel to Italy and visit this exquisite little slice of heaven in Montali.

There are some beautiful recipes in this book, none of which I want to make. They are definitely recipes from a restaurant, too complex for me at home.

This is a beautiful, passionate book with gorgeous, full page pictures of the food for almost every recipe. This would make a great present for your favorite foodie.......or just treat yourself. We are carnivores but still love all the beautiful fresh recipes and the deserts are really fabulous.

There isn't a single recipe that I have tried that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. I've served most of these to guests (even on the first try!) and each dish has gone over very well. Yum! Recipes are easy to follow, and the while my versions aren't as lovely as the expert version pictured in the book... the photography is lovely, and helpful.

I only recently purchased this cookbook, since my children are now all vegetarians. Being Italian, that could pose a problem in the kitchen, especially at the holidays, however, it did not. I made our entire Christmas feast from this cookbook, and it was absolutely incredible! I recommend this highly, especially if you're looking for authentic Italian cuisine that's vegetarian.
Beautiful pictures. I bought it from my Mother for a Christmas present and she loved it! It's a heavy book too.
