Pushapanath lived in Kottayam, Kerala. He died 2 May 2018 aged 80 at his home in Kottayam after a long bout of age-related problems. He was married to Mariyamma, and had three children - Salim, Seenu and Jemi. His elder son Salim, who was himself famous as a wildlife photographer, died of a heart attack on 10 April 2018, preceding his father's death by three weeks. According to various sources, Pushpanath was terribly grief-stricken after his son's sudden death, and it was that grief which led to his death.
