I literally wore out my first NY Times Natural Foods Cookbook, and was thrilled to find a replacement. This used volume was in excellent condition, and the person who gave it up for resale for whatever reason should feel satisfied that it is well appreciated. It is worth the price of the book for the buttermilk roll recipe alone. Not all of the recipes are vegetarian, but there are still many and they are delicious.

This is a very good book for its time and helped to really launch the natural foods movement. It is one of the main foundations for todays food consciousness. Although Jean had no understanding of the dangers of gluten - this book should be seen for what it is - - a pioneering effort. Although asked repeatedly to do television as her colleague, Julia Child was doing - Jean preferred to work behind the scenes.

This book gave me the confidence to become a gourmet cook. The 2010 Gourmand Cookbook Awards have made it official: The Essential New York Times Cookbook is the third best cookbook in the world. Jean D. Hewitt, a former food writer and home economist for The New York Times and an early advocate of natural foods, died on Sunday in the Bon Secours-Venice Hospital in Venice, Fla. She was 71 and made her home in Venice. The cause was pneumonia, the family said. Mrs. Hewitt planned The Times's test kitchen and was in charge of it from its opening in 1969. At the time, a number of newspapers employed home economics graduates as food writers and set up kitchens on the premises to test food and recipes

The book is a compilation of NY Times reader's submissions for cooking with non-processed foods. 'Nuff said for folks interested in improving the quality of their diets.

One of my favorite recipes is for buckwheat pancakes. Another is for Logan Bread ("one 2x2 inch square is enough to sustain a man for a day," so the contributor says - which I will not claim is totally accurate, although I have made many batches of Logan Bread for backpacking and winter camping trips).

I expect to get many years of use out of this cookbook.

This is an Excellent cookbook for those interested in wholesome and healthy cooking. I like all others here purchased this book many years ago. I recently replaced my old paperback with a hardback copy and came here looking for one as a gift. The bread and vegetarian recipes can't be beat, and there are many. This is a much sought after edition ~ if you find it available better snatch it up!

I wore out my old paperback copy of this book. It is an oldie, but a goodie and mine split in two at the page of my best potato latke recipe. After all those Hanukkah parties with raves about my potato pancakes, I felt I deserved the hardback version.

Unfortunately the cookbook had been revised from the original and missing some of my favorite recipes. My fault for not looking more closely before purchase.

This is NOT the original New York Times Natural Foods Cookbook, it's the "New" one or the second one they came out with. A lot of the original recipes are gone, like the awesome banana bread.

Purchased this for a family member whose own book was being held togeher by clips and rubber bands from overuse. Absolutely swears by this cookbook but could not find another as it is out of print. I offered to get her a new one just knowing Amazon would come to the rescue. It did and I got her the book. She is thrilled that I found it and she is happily cooking all her favorites with the pages all intact. She is a vegetarian and loves this book. As for me, the banana nut bread with whole wheat and yogurt is awesome.

I used to have this book many years ago and liked it. I lost it at some point so I was replacing it. There are a lot of good recipes and helpful information
This cookbook is chock-ful of wonderful healthy recipes. It is worth the price of the book for the buttermilk roll recipe alone. I had a paperback copy I bought at a health food store in the mid 70s and was so happy to find a hard back copy on Amazon as my old copy was getting way too fragile and needs to be given a place of honor in my old delicate book shelf. Not all of the recipes are vegetarian, but there are still many and they are delicious.
