I agree with some other reviewers, that Cynthia Lair makes a good start but neglects many important whole foods such as yogurt, kefir, free-range beef, wild salmon, etc. The main dishes focus way too heavily on grains, with chicken being the only meat, and seldom, at that. There are some great recipes for adding more veggies to your diet. While the recipes aren't super easy, they're not very difficult, either. As far as the recipes being adapatable for babies, the only comments she makes are to puree some vegetables and grains during the cooking process and set them aside for baby. Most babies graduate from pureed foods in a matter of weeks and begin to prefer finger foods. Her information on why to breastfeed and avoid commercial baby foods and supplements is EXCELLENT, however.

For me, the best part of this book was the dessert section. I have an incurable sweet tooth (that I'm trying to cure). When I began eating whole foods, I cut WAY back on sweets, but I still crave a treat now and then. She gives excellent advice on how to convert your favorite dessert recipes to whole foods by substituting bananas, dates, honey, etc. for the sugar and whole-wheat flour for all-purpose flour. There are also quite a few whole-foods dessert recipes included like cake, cookies, brownies, etc.

The beginning of the book outlines good reasons for switching to whole foods. Unfortunately, she places too much trust in the "food pyramid" promoted by the USDA and encourages a low-fat diet. Many whole foods are naturally high in fat, full of vitamins, and intended to complement the whole foods that are naturally low in fat. She does write, however, that her book is only a starting point and each family needs to do their own research into the healthiest foods for their family. An excellent point.

This book is a good addition to your library of whole foods cookbooks, but please don't let it be your only one. In addition, I recommend "Whole Foods for the Whole Family," "Nourishing Traditions," and "The Maker's Diet."

More than just recipes, the author has great tips on getting your kids to eat veggies, what rules should be enforced at the dinner table, general advice on healthy eating, etc. I bought a copy for a friend who just had her second boy since I didn't know what she could possibly need that she didn't already have (other than diapers). It contains advice on things you don't necessarily get figured out after having your first child (or subsequent children, for that matter).

The only difficulty I found is in finding some of the more exotic ingredients; I wish she would list substitutes. I live in Austin, a wonderful place for finding anything vegan/organic/generally-out-there-stuff and even I can't seem to find brown rice vinegar! I've checked Central Market, Whole Foods, and Natural Grocers...they're stumped. I guess I'll have to settle for the white rice variety.

I used this book a lot when my son was diagnosed with food allergies at 12 months old. I loved it. It is easy to use and the recipes are great. I loaned it to a friend and never got it back, so I came on here to try to order a similar one, I don't need the baby part anymore, but the recipes were so good and I wanted to make them again.

I first discovered this book at my local La Leche League group library and I was so wowed! I immediately ordered this book from Amazon last year and I have used it more than any of my over 30 cookbooks combined. The book is just wonderful, full of delicious healthy recipies that the whole family will enjoy. I like that there is an index that describes some foods that you might find different and tells you where to find them although non of the ingredients are so exotic that they can't be found in a good health food store or regular grocery store. The recipies are also tailored at the end for babies and toddlers and there are lots of hints on healthy eating at the beggining. Cynthia Lair knows her stuff, and the best part is that the "Whole Family" loves the recipies which really is the best indication of a good cookbook. You will love this!

I am a new mom, and since I am breastfeeding, I am living on a somewhat limited diet right now (no dairy, wheat, sugar, spice, etc). My sister, a Naturopathic Doctor, recommended this book to me. I think it is the first cookbook I have read cover to cover. There is a lot of good information about whole foods, how to buy and store them, and how to fix them. The recipes also have suggestions on how to alter a small part of the meal in order to feed it to an infant (one of the big ideas in this book is for everyone to partake of the same meal - even babies). I haven't actually made any of the recipes in this book yet, but I have used it as a reference (how to cook some of the new grains I am trying, ideas for meals, etc.). I know that my sister and many of her friends use this book regularly. I would recommend this book.

This is a very good book for all family members. NO complicated and just wholesome healthy cooking. Every now and then I like to try someone else's recipes and this book is uncomplicated and has some good stuff !

This is a really fun book to read, for not only the recipes but also the child feeding information. I really enjoy the author's conversational way of sharing information. But what really earns it five stars is the whole grain bread recipe! I love to bake bread and this is the best recipe I've ever used. The bread comes out just as soft and moist as the wonderful Great Harvest bakery's Honey Wheat bread that I love so much. Another recipe that has become a family favorite is the Three Sisters Stew. I highly recommend this book!
This is a great cookbook. Full of easy, delicious recipes that my kids love. The author uses easy-to-find ingredients (as long as you have access to a natural food store) and many of her meals can be prepared in 30 minutes. Almost every recipe I've prepared has been a hit and many have become staple meals for us.
