Pellegrini also discovers the dangerous underbelly of hunting when an outing turns illegal - and dangerous. Each chapter offers recipes for finger-licking dishes such as. Wild turkey and oyster stew.

After abandoning Wall Street to embrace her lifelong love of cooking, Georgia Pellegrini comes face to face with her first kill. From honoring that first turkey to realizing that the only way we truly know where our meat comes from is if we hunt it ourselves, Pellegrini embarks on a wild ride into the real world of local, organic, and sustainable food.

Three stars, primarily for the recipes and the novelty of the subject. The book has a flair for prose, but is light on meaningful content. Girl Hunter is presented as a journey towards a Manhattan female investor becoming a hunter. Ms. Pellegrini attended a Manhattan prep school, Wellesley College (alma mater of Hillary Clinton), became a Wall Street financial analyst, and then graduated from the French Culinary Institute. Along the way, one assumes she got a book deal to drop out and take up hunting for a year. There was so much missing about the critical decision to take up hunting for a year that I found myself drifting while she launched right into the hunt.

I have no problem with her perspective of hunting, as it is hers to have. She clearly has connections that enable her to hunt with wealthy and powerful friends, and this has also helped launch her PR efforts around this book. This, however, will not be most people's experience. One meaningful observation she had while hunting on an English estate (complete with rides in a Bentley) is the difference between hunting in the US and elsewhere. In England, hunting is viewed as an activity of the rich and privileged. It is a formal affair led by the estate owner. In the US, it is viewed as a redneck sport done by bearded men with pickup trucks and gun racks. What is not discussed in detail is the new wave of hunters who don't care about racks of antlers, but are interested in the natural food and outdoors.

If you are considering hunting, pick up Lily Raff McCaulou's Call of the Mild. You'll get deeper insight into the process most new hunters will endure, and will find a more revealing personal journey. McCaulou leads you through her thought process as an environmentalist and conservationist, and talks about the quality time she spends with her husband and friends during her journey.

Ms. Pellegrini knows food. Her narrative comes alive when she describes the food she is either eating or preparing. This aspect really sets the book apart from other books within the general genre of pop-hunting books. Her shooting and trekking descriptions in contrast to this were cold and nearly clinical in their descriptions. You can nearly taste the javelina (which I never knew to be edible much less delicious) when she prepares it but its actual death involves statements of getting off a four wheeler, pointing and shooting. It’s interesting to read from her perspective as a chef (ie. running sausages for hogs) but her perspective is not really widely applicable or relatable.

Other reviews mention her hunting experiences largely originating from a position of privilege, but I don’t think this a fair characterization. She does have wealthy connections, but many of the stories include people of more modest means. My take-away generally was that if you want to hunt somewhere that does not have a lot of public land accessibility you need to network with ranchers and landowners to get permission. The notable exception to this was the Texas hunting club experience which she did not pay for but rather she went as part of a publicity stunt for the ranch itself.

The one thing that I did find strange and off putting was her hard look at British social hunting and her consideration of its social undertones related to the landed gentry but the almost complete neglect of such social considerations when dealing with American hunters. While not all books have to address the social and racial inequities in the South, there should at least be some mention of it if only to dispel the whole idyllic image she creates in its stead.

I have not tried her recipes, yet, but I intend to. If there is one thing I am confident of is her ability to cook.

Generally, I think the book offers a unique voice and a consolidated listing of delicious and easy recipes but it lacks good storytelling.

This is easily my favorite book to have read in years. I've taught hunter education a few times and currently work at a sporting goods store and very often recommend it to people who are new to outdoor sports or might be considering joining us. I'm exceedingly thankful she wrote this as we need more people to see what a great cultural legacy we have that deserves appreciation.

Not sure what to say here, but it just wasn't as great as expected. An interesting read, and I admire the author tremendously. It just wasn't that captivating, and wasn't very educational. It might be kind of empowering for a female hunter.

Don't read this book if you are hungry the recipes scattered through the book will make you hungry. It's a little repetitive - hunting and cooking and eating. It's about a chef who shoots her own food and then prepares it in very interesting ways. Girls and guns - what's not to like!

I bought this book to give to my daughter and see if she goes hunting for wild pigs in Florida, where she lives. The theme is interesting; a young woman who hunts to eat what she bags, who can resist that? That the author is an accomplished, professional from then canyons of the "Big Apple" makes it even more compelling to read. She seems to have the advantage of enjoying the world of the seasoned, professional hunter; although I don't know how she did it. She hunts many of the animals that are available to all and each separate hunt is an interesting episode that is followed by recipes for preparing her catch. As she is also educated in preparing fine cuisine, the recipes are professional in their approach to each dish. If you are engaged in hunting and want to know how to prepare your game in the best possible manner you will enjoy her expertise in the kitchen and you will be amused to know of the hunters she met as she ventured out on her quest. A quest that may exceed the animals that even you have gone after. Read and enjoy cooking what you have captured.
GREAT
