She spun her weapons nacelles toward the threat, but felt her energy draining as she was pulled ever closer to the surface. How could there be so many in this When? (lifeboats please respond! don’t land! get out of the system!) The Enemy grasped with its essence, snaring three of the four lifeboats. It pulled the tiny vessels intimately close and began to absorb them into itself.

The book encompasses a wide range of characters, and the author makes me care about even the AI beings, who merely puzzle me at first. With all the Biblical allusions, he has a nice twist, making the Judas vessels the good guys. I am left unsure as to whether the alt-when's are Real or merely possibilities that don't ever fully develop, but at least, the baddies lose in the end.

I wish the author had not tried to expand this story into a trilogy. While I enjoyed this first book, the increasing problems of the follow-ups drained this story of many of its strengths. What seems a happy ending turns into only another alt-when, which cheapens its apparent victory. Now I wonder if this writer considers anything ultimately real or knowable. I don't mind philosophizing, but I do hold to the maxim that unlike real life, fiction ought to make sense. When sense breaks down, I feel betrayed.

I recommend Enemy as a thriller and a Good read. At the same time, I also recommend that most readers ignore the rest of the series.

It's a lengthy and occasionally brilliant story that bent my mind a lot. I finally figured it out towards the end, but all the different "conversations" going on at the same time really really confused me. Disorienting. The twist at the end finally made it all make sense.

Paul Hughes writes in an unusual manor and if you read this series you must start with this book or you could be lost for good.

Isn't that how it always is? A boy and a girl at the end of the world. Hughes writes an emotionally gripping novel placed in a place out of space and time. With a twist around every corner, the basic story that runs true throughout. The Enemy and the Judas take you through a wonderfully woven tale.

Great story but it edges a bit too close to using The Matrix's plot line at time -- which doesn't make it bad... Just less original.

Authors who write in a style of alien thoughts, just do not get it. I do not like it, that makes it difficult to follow the book. As far as I am concerned it is a waste of words. I want to see a nice logical chain of words, ideas and progression. this book does not have that. could not make it more than 30 pages in. Save your couple of bucks and avoid this book.

This is the most fascinating book I've ever read. NOT easy, but fascinating. Liquid time, past and future travel. Guy meets/falls in love with gal multiple times, in multiple places, in multiple physical forms. People as computer files. Spirits/demons. Heaven/hell. Alpha/Omega. Alternities. What kind of a mind is this? I feel like Spock, seeing an illogical something for the first time: FASCINATING. Having devoured it once, I will now start again, and read it at a more leisurely pace . . . . The only reason I gave 4, not 5, stars was my confusion at the start, before I understood the cyclic form of time. So, will I be rereading this book, or starting it for the first time in another cycle? Superbly cool.
this book is a little masterpiece. the writing is poetic, lyrical and still succinct. the story is quantum and sweeping; but the characters are vivid, specific individuals. i have read a lot of indie kindle sci fi--and this book has exceeded the bar of my expections significantly. the editing is good, there are no loose ends, the plot is mature and expertly constructed. the story unfolds forward and backward and side-to-side. this is not a time travel novel--but it does take place across time. and in space. and on earth. and in alternities. i recommend this book without hesitation. now, i'm off to read the second installment...
